Alexander Paul Coe (born September 4, 1969) is an English DJ, record producer and Grammy Award nominee. He was elected as DJ No. 1 World in 2000 in a poll conducted by DJ Magazine. She is the winner of the International Dance Music Award four times and four times the DJ Award winner.
Sasha started her career by playing acid dance music in the late 1980s. He partnered with fellow DJ John Digweed in 1993, toured internationally and produced a series of mixtures (compilations of other works of art that were played on an ongoing basis).
Sasha has overhauled tracks for artists like Madonna, The Chemical Brothers, and Hot Chip. Remixing and Sasha's production often incorporate electronic music genres, making it difficult for critics to define their musical style, including on their debut album of the original, Airdrawndagger .
After achieving success as a producer and DJ, Sasha works with DJs and younger producers like BT and James Zabiela. The use of his live audio engineering tools helped popularize technological innovations among DJs that previously depended on recordings and turntables. In 2007, he formed a record label with Renaissance Records called emFire, which is an exclusive outlet for his new music. Sasha is managed by the Three Six Zero Group.

Initial years
Sasha was born in Bangor, Wales on September 4, 1969, but spent most of his youth with his mother in the town of Welc, Sandycroft, Flintshire, North Wales. Sasha's mother teaches French at Hawarden High School. Sasha has early music tastes especially Top 40 pop music such as The The and The Police. After his "beautiful childhood", he passed the entrance exam for Hatfield University at the age of 17. However, he did not like Epsom and left before completing his A-Level exam. Instead of continuing her schooling, Sasha moved to Bangor to live with her father and stepmother. Sasha's stepmother forced her to take a piano lesson that, although she did not like them at the time, Sasha finally proved useful for her music career.
Sasha became aware of electronic dance music in 1988 at The Ha̮'̤ienda, a Manchester dance venue. Attracted to the rough sound of acidic house music and rebellious attitudes associated with it, he visited Manchester weekly and immediately moved to nearby Disley. Sasha bought a lot of jazz recordings and started teaching herself how to mix. A local DJ at a club frequented by Sasha announced that he was looking for another DJ to travel with him on a regional tour. Sasha volunteered and made her first live appearance in nearby Stockport. Sasha remembers his debut, "I never even touched Technics: I think pitch control is volume, I do not even know where to put my headphones in! I'm sure I'm really horrendous."
Sasha soon finds herself in debt for a low-cost show and many records she buys. To finance his record collection, he performed in an illegal warehouse rave in the Blackburn and Blackpool areas. With the help of another local DJ, Jon DaSilva, Sasha secured a job at The Ha̮'̤ienda, where he studied mixing keys (matching melody keys) from DaSilva and refining his ability to defeat whiz (to synchronize two tap taps simultaneously). Although he enjoyed playing at The Ha̮'̤ienda, in 1990 Sasha went to a club called Shelley's Laserdrome in Stoke-on-Trent. There, he established part of his distinctive voice by mixing home music of euphoric acid with Italian piano house and emotional cappellas. Due to his increased popularity and visibility in Shelley's and the fact the promoter works for magazines, Mixmag show Sasha on its first cover, under the title "SASHA MANIA - DJ FIRST PINUP?". While continuing to the DJ, Sasha began producing some of her own dance songs. This, he later noted, contradicts the career path of many successful DJs, who are more common to start as producers. After signing a recording contract, he also prepared the entire recording studio at the same time, which led to a "painful learning curve" at first. Sasha's first production/remix credit was two singles for Evolution: 1990's "Came Outa Nowhere (Take Me Higher Mix)" and "Metropolis" in 1991, where it produced and re-mixed both sides of the classic home track; The record is best known for "Can not Stand The Feeling Mix", in which Sasha replicates his signature mixing style placing va cappella on top of the main track, vocals from The Jason Load Experience single "Mainline '90", released in 1989 He released his first single, "Appolonia", under the name BM: Ex (this name stands for The Barry Manilow Experience, a joke referring to Sasha piano love), with producer Tom Frederikse at Union City Recordings. After performing DJs at Shelley for several years, Sasha left his position due to increasing gang violence inside and around the club. As a result of his growing reputation, Sasha was offered work at several London and Australian clubs. He accepts, instead, a place in the DJ rotation at the Renaissance night club started by Geoff Oakes at Venue 44 in Mansfield, England.
Then in 1993, Sasha produced "Together", her first single under the name Sasha . "Together", which he produced with Danny Campbell for FFRR Pete Tong, culminated in the UK Singles Chart at # 57. With this success, Sasha started a series of recordings for Deconstruction Records with singles "Higher Ground" and "Magic" (the Digweed produced remixes ) and The Qat Collection with Frederikse and vocalist Sam Mollison.

Careers
Digweed Era
In early 1993, Sasha partnered with fellow Renaissance DJ John Digweed. Sasha and Digweed honed their DJ skills, often performing together and focusing on track selection and technical mixing abilities. The Renaissance was pleased with their performance, and asked the duo to compile a triple-CD mixture of Renaissance - The Mix Collection , releasing it on the club's Renaissance Records label. The album features songs from artists such as Leftfield, Fluke, and 2 Bad Mice, as well as original productions and remixes from Sasha and Digweed. The Mix Collection was released shortly after Sasha's departure from the Renaissance in April 1994. After her success in the Renaissance, Sasha again appeared on Mixmag with the SON OF GOD tagline. , though he hates the award. After a two-year joint tour, the duo became a "true superstar" with the release of their double CD Northern Exposure in the mega-label Reporting Ministry. Around this time, Sasha started repeated mentoring and partnerships with fellow BT producers with album Ima . As well as providing guidance for BT, Sasha produced a 42-minute "euphoric" and "introspective" rendition of the album that formed the centerpiece of the British release and emerged as the second "bonus" disc on the US release. He continues to advance his own production work in pairs with vocalist Maria Nayler to produce the single "Be as One", which reached # 17 on the UK singles chart.
In 1997, the Ministry of Sound released Northern Exposure 2 , the next double-CD Sasha and Digweed entries in their Northern Exposure series. To support the album, the duo toured internationally, and in the process helped to determine the sound of trance music in the late 1990s. After extensive touring, Digweed and Sasha take residency at Twilo's famous nightclub in New York City, where they will perform DJs throughout the night. In 1998, they released a separate mix album on the Boxed label, as part of the Global Underground series: Digweed's
Sasha reaches a more mainstream audience with her remix of Madonna's "Ray of Light" and "Purple" GusGus for the singles' single releases. His success in pop music led him to print music for PlayStation Wipeout 3 and Gran Turismo video games. In 1999, Sasha and Digweed reunited in the studio to record their third edition in the Northern Exposure series, Northern Exposure: Expeditions . In addition to mixing and DJing, Sasha joins Charlie May from Spooky to produce Xpander EP , the title track that many clubbers still see as "one of the greatest trance tracks of all time". He used the title song as the center for Global Underground 013: Ibiza , the second Global Underground release. Sasha continued his collaboration with BT on the song "Ride", which was released as a single on Yoshitoshi Records and on the Movement in Still Life . Soon after, he worked with Underworld's Darren Emerson on single "Scorchio", Sasha's first single charting in four years. Among the tours and producing original materials, Sasha and Digweed released their mixed album Communicating in 2000, prompting them to temporarily abandon their Twilo residency for a United States promotional tour. Communicate has mixed reviews: Spin states that although "some stellar moments, [ Communicating ] ultimately is a disappointment." LAUNCHcast, too, described Communicating as "boring and uninspired... stuck in a monochrome world of dead knocks".
During the late 1990s, the increasing popularity and visibility of the "DJ superstar" led to the creation of superclubs such as Liverpool's Cream and Sheffield's Gatecrasher. In 2003, however, the electronic dance music club languished. The Guardian Critic, Alexis Petridis, attributes the "terminal drop" of dance music to excessive commercialization by DJs with big names, such as Sasha, and their demands for increased fees for performances.. Although dance music has been declared "dead" by many in the dance industry, Sasha continues to tour - despite the closure of many superclubs, including the club's population of Twilo in May 2001.
Delta Heavy Tour
Following the closure of Twilo, Sasha and Digweed embarked on their ambitious Delta Heavy Tour in the United States in 2002. Featuring seasoned tour producer Kevin Lyman and Jimmy Van M's opener, the tour covers 31 cities and is played to 85,000 people. His appearance, complete with laser performances and video production, is more akin to rock concerts than regular DJs. This development was new in the DJ scene, and forced other DJs to hold similar concerts. A performance highlights DVD, interview, and behind-the-scenes footage were released as Sasha & amp; John Digweed presents Delta Heavy with System Recordings. Ben Turner, the creator of the DanceStar award, retrospectively described Delta Heavy's tour as "an important moment for electronic music". Although Sasha and Digweed's duo never explicitly split up, demanding an independent schedule and tour often prevents substantial collaboration for the long term after Delta Heavy.
Post Digweed
During the second half of 2002, Sasha collaborated with great beat artist Junkie XL on the single "Breezer". Junkie XL, along with Charlie May, also helped Sasha on the second album of original material, Airdrawndagger . Airdrawndagger took several years to produce because of Sasha's wish that the album be "as close to perfection" as possible. That March, Sasha suffered a perforated eardrum in a traffic accident, further delaying the production of the album. Although the accident temporarily interferes with his hearing, he gets inspired for the album from his ordeal. Airdrawndagger finally released, in August 2002, with much fanfare. However, the album was "received with a lot of scratching heads", according to Sasha, which he stated as an unexpected mixture of genres. The album did not feature a heavier "club sound" than Sasha's previous mixed album, having a closer resemblance to ambient music. Airdrawndagger generally receives favorable reviews, although critics note that it is inconsistent and well produced as a mixed DJ. Sasha himself describes it as a "selfish, self-indulgent note," though he states that he is "happy with it to this day". Some critics, however, call it "sleepy"; E! Online describes it as "more allied with Yanni than Moby". To encourage the interest of listeners, Sasha held an amateur remix contest for the album's first single, "Wavy Gravy". Due to the success of the contest, Sasha released all songs from Airdrawndagger on their website, so fans can download and create their own versions.
After the release of Airdrawndagger, Sasha took the young DJ James Zabiela "under his wing". He introduced Zabiela to the CDJ1000 turntable, and signed Zabiela to the Excession talent agency. The two toured with the United States, extending Sasha's influence to popular American DJs like Kimball Collins.
In 2004, Sasha signed a contract with Global Underground to produce another mixed album. However, he found the process of making a standard mixed album unfavorable, and decided to apply his production skills and DJs to a mixed compilation that resembles a "real" album - that is, featuring original material. The next studio album Sasha, Involver , is a "mix of album mix and production record", entirely made up of Sasha rework by other artists. "I tried to take all the separate sounds to all the tracks [and combine them]", he then explained, "and that lets me combine the track together at a much deeper level." She completed this by sorting albums using Ableton Live and Logic Pro. Ableton Live is a music-based software loop that Sasha uses to engineer tracks in real-time, while using Logic Pro primarily for planned editing to audio tracks.
In 2005, Sasha produced her next mixed album, Fundacion NYC , based on her DJing night in New York at the Crobar club. Fundacion NYC received a positive review for its originality, though JIVE Magazine found it "too complicated for the ears". Sasha is happy with this album, and plans to make a series of Fundacion albums. The following year, Sasha released 10,000 copies of the DJ set in June 2006 for sale using Instant Live, making it the first DJ to use the Instant Live licensing and publishing service. In August 2007, Sasha announced the creation of its record label, Emfire, which would be an exclusive outlet for its new material in vinyl and digital format. His first release was "COMA", a collaborative song by a group of similar names, featuring Sasha, Barry Jamieson, Charlie May, and Duncan Forbes. While continuing regularly DJs, Sasha starts working on another Mixed Involver mix and next Fundacion mix . Sasha's Invol2ver was released in September 2008, and Invol & lt; 3r was released in March 2013.
Reuniting with Digweed
Despite frequent keeping them apart for several years, Sasha and Digweed announced that they would be reunited for some Australian performances. In November 2006, the duo performed in several places, including Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne as well as many tour dates throughout 2007. In 2008, Sasha and Digweed embarked on an American tour with performances at the Winter Music Conference. These duo play in places mainly larger on weekends and smaller (750-1000 people) show on weekdays. Sasha describes their music as "driving and dark" with "a bit of Twilo thunderbolt".
Sasha runs a music studio and lives in New York City, and manages a house in London. He brought his wife with him on a frequent tour. Sasha finds the constant tour to be physically exhausting, though she also feels that she thrives on it. Although fans may regard Sasha as a "hero" DJ, she is uncomfortable with fame; Sasha considers herself "embarrassed" and is usually uncomfortable discussing her private life. He has mentioned several times that he is so busy with DJs and productions that he seldom has time to spare. However, he likes to watch football, cook, and taste the cuisine of the countries he visits. The film "New Emissions Light & Sound" won the Best Original Score at the X-Dance Film Festival. This score consists of new and previously unreleased songs.
Sasha and Digweed have reunited in recent years. The iconic duo Sasha and John Digweed performed the song Back to Back at the Ministry of Sound in London on 24 March. Shortly after, the Duo announced a list of tour dates for September 2016 to relaunch themselves in a series of Gigs and perform Back to Back.
Music genre
Influenced by the earliest sounds of The HaÃÆ'çienda, Sasha began her career playing the prestigious home-grown prestigious genre recordings. In the early 1990s, he moved into a darker European house style, though during his residency at Shelley he began experimenting more with American homes. His taste progressed as he moved to the Renaissance, and he began to incorporate pop-based sound from Moby, Spooky, and Leftfield. Sasha's second Digweed collaboration, 1997's Northern Exposure, was described as "epic house", and subsequent releases featured trance spacey and atmospheric sounds from artists such as Sven VÃÆ'äth, Matt Darey, Tilt, and Armin Van Buuren. A rhythmic and rhythmic progressive house distinguished the albums of Xpander EP and album mix in the late 1990s. At that time, Sasha's musical rotation included recordings by artists such as Space Maneuvers, BT, and Breeder, and Sander Kleinenberg's single "My Lexicon".
With the 2000 Communicating album, the duo's work moves toward deeper and darker house music sounds. The album features songs by Morel, Mainline, and Jimmy Van M. The focus shifts from melodic themes from previous releases that support a stronger emphasis on bassline. Delta Heavy Tour and Airdrawndagger marks a dramatic change in style, and reflects the relaxing influence of ambient music and breakbeats on Sasha's work. This influence inspires strong melodies from the album, sometimes breakbeat loops, and limited percussion usage. Involver is basically a blend of home and rest music styles marked by UNKLE and Lostep. With 2005 Fundacion , Sasha's style is largely a progressive home and electro house music, with work by James Holden, Tiefschwarz, and Swayzak. With his success at progressive home, Sasha commented that he felt people were trying to "pigeon-hole" him into playing the genre. Instead of calling it a progressive home, Sasha considers her latest material to be between home, possession, and rest, though she states that she would rather not associate herself with a particular musical genre.
Techniques and technologies
Sasha connects her success with her technical skills and the ability to "connect with her dancers". During the show, he balances new and experimental materials, while ensuring that "parties are still rockin '". Spontaneity leads to studio work; he usually only has a vague idea of ââa song list when he starts working on a new mixed album. Therefore, his album never changes as he wished. Sasha is known for applying new music technology to his studio and his direct work. Both Sasha and Digweed use Pro Tools on Macintosh computers when mixing their compilation albums, and using turntables and recordings during live performances. For their remixes, however, they use Atari ST - outdated personal computers from the early 1990s - with Notator, a music sequencer used to organize audio tracks. For more recent albums such as Fundacion NYC , Sasha uses Ableton Live for sorting, partly because of the higher Pro Tools prices. In live performances until the late 1990s, Sasha performed exclusively on recordings. Before he started using CDJ1000, a "turntable" used for CDs, he had his special digital music cut to record assets before each tour. After he integrates the CD into his live broadcast, Sasha operates the CDJ1000 with Allen & amp; Mixer Heath and FireworX.
Sasha started DJing with Ableton Live in his live action as well, using it together with turntables. After exploring his function, Sasha finds that he can perform entirely through Ableton Live. He then co-developed the Maven controller, which he used as a physical interface to Live software. (DJing with the mouse alone, he says, is "will not look right or feel right.") Fundacion NYC is the first album in which he regularly uses Maven controllers. During the set of DJs, clubbers often believe Sasha is playing a new remix that has never been heard before; in fact, he often plays modified songs made in Ableton. Sasha most often uses the built-in Ableton plugin, preferring their superior stability and performance rather than third-party plugins. For the first public performance of Involver materials, he used a PowerBook running Ableton, but has since shifted to settings that include iMac G5 and Ableton Live. Despite Sasha's insistence that Ableton Live allows for greater creativity and spontaneity, "puritan vinyl" has accused him of taking on many of the challenges and mystique of DJing by using software in the show.
The Internet has affected how Sasha acquires and uses tracks for performance. Though he once hunted through record stores for new records on a regular basis, Sasha now regularly receives new songs from producers and labels via the Internet. This track, which is hundreds of times each week, is edited by Sasha and others for use in its live DJ set. He still buys hundreds of recordings on vinyl, which are then recorded and converted into music files before being edited in Ableton by his team of engineers.
In February 2013, Sasha spoke to Resident Advisor about her decision to switch from using Live and Maven controllers to a combination of Original Instrument Tractors and CDs in her DJ device. He feels that while Ableton Live has grown significantly as a production software, it has become less successful as a DJ tool.
Awards and nominations
In 2005, the Grammy committee debated whether Involver was eligible to be nominated as Best Electronic/Dance Album. The Recording Academy decides that the album is eligible, but Engage does not accept a nomination. Sasha received a Grammy nomination for her remix of Felix da Housecat "Watching Cars Go By", which was featured on Involver .
