Careers

In 1993, when Bessant and Stringer searched for band members, House met with Dominic Greensmith (from Barnstaple, Devon) in London, and discussed the band's formation. The four of them finally gathered, and began to jam, resulting in a rare "Purple Tape" demo.

After recording a few songs, the band spent much of their 1994 tour and built a fan base. They signed a contract with S2, a branch of Sony. Their first single "Good Feeling" was released on an independent label, but was financed by Sony, then as the official release of Sony S2 in early 1995. This paved the way for "Naked", used in TV commercials for Sony MiniDisc in which record company executives heard songs in MiniDisc and throw it out of the window by disagreeing. It's taken by a young man outside, who listens to it and loves it (showing its formality resilience). There was some disagreement about the participation of the band in this campaign, but in the interviews they have emphasized that they are a young band and were offered the chance that any young band would not refuse.

Commercial success

During their tour in '94 and '95 Reef support Paul Weller, The Rolling Stones and Soundgarden, among others.

Both The Good Feeling and Naked singles are from the release of Reef's 1995, their gold debut album is now Replenish . The album was recorded in the recording studio of the secluded Cornish Sawmills and in a studio in Bath.

"We want our first album, Replenish, to be absolutely honest, four people play in a room and get something that really belongs to them, it's recorded in the most basic way possible. Until now, everything I use for effects is a wah-pedal and I only use it on two songs, "says guitarist Kenwyn House.

Hot on the heels of Replenish, in the summer of 1995, came a non-album, four single release tracks entitled "Weird". It was a very non-commercial path and Reef said the release was aimed at fans. "Sunrise Shaker", one side B to "Weird", was later featured in Day Tripper's snowboarding film, by independent filmmaker Christian Stevenson. Stevenson, famous for his film on extreme and free sports, then directed a promotional video for Reef, for their single "Sweety" in 1999.

The follow-up to Replenish was Glow in 1997, which was more diverse, with the band using different instruments and creating more appealing styles. Glow was recorded under the guidance of The Black Crowes recording producer, George Drakoulious and was engineered by Jim Scott, in Los Angeles. It spawned hit singles "Place Your Hands", "Come Back Brighter", "Considerations" and "Yer Old" which enhances Reef's profile in the UK and abroad. On the launch week, Glow goes straight to number 1 on the UK Albums Chart.

"Place Your Hands", released on October 21, 1996, is the most successful single Reef to date, reaching number 6 on the UK singles chart. This song explains the sadness that Stringer feels after the death of his grandfather, and reduces the pain of death. The video for "Place Your Hands", directed by David Mold, features band members on pulleys and wires to create an energetic air display.

During their tour in late 1996, Reef was supported by Feeder, who at the time laid the foundations for their own careers.

In early 1999 Reef released their third album Rides , which was recorded at Ocean Way Studios in Los Angeles, the same studio used by The Beach Boys for Pet Sounds and Michael Jackson for Thriller. They swapped instruments on several tracks, with Stringer and Greensmith playing guitar and singing Bessant on one song. Working again with Glow producer George Drakoulias, the band also requested the skills of David Campbell (the father of American artist Beck) for string settings. Rose Stone of Sly and Stone Fame family appeared as supporting singers. Jack told the NME magazine that the album showed a more mature side to Reef but they still had fun, using a slide guitar, and trying to achieve a "movie" feel for some of the songs. The album was well received by critics, but commercially it could not match the previous success of its predecessor Glow .

Later work

The fourth album and most of the commercial work, Getaway (Sony) was released in 2000, and produced by Al Clay, which is also produced for Pixies and Stereophonics. "Set The Record Straight" is the culmination of the album, and it is also used as the theme song for the BBC drama series Red Cap , starring Tamzin Outhwaite.

The single "Superhero" was released in the same year, featuring an impromptu show video held at Bessant's Hoxton Square flat, in London, that summer that year. Bessant empties the property and uses the opportunity to hold a small show with a list of select guests, especially from the music industry. One of the famous guests was Andrea Corr, while also attending BBC Radio 1, plus Kerrang! and NME magazine.

The third and final release of Getaway, is "All I Want," a ballad, and very different from the first two releases. Despite playing well on Radio 2, the single only reached number 51 on the UK charts. This video features band members who are stranded in a drifting boat, drawing straws for who will sacrifice themselves to save others.

The end of 2000 saw Reef facing legal action from the US company Southern Cone Inc. for their trademark infringement, Brazilian Reef (as found on sandals and shoes), on the basis that T-shirts, and other merchandising such as stickers, hats and key chains can cause confusion in the market. South Cone's actions fail because their brand is actually REEF BRAZIL rather than REEF, and because their business and main reputation is with the sale of sandals and shoes. Also important to the result is the fact that Reef (band) uses T-shirts and other items as marketing for the band rather than trying to promote T-shirts (or other clothing, including footwear) as a commodity in the self. Reef (band) was awarded Ã, Â £ 1000.

During 2001, after a low key tour in favor of Texas, they took a long summer vacation, in North Devon, to write new material for their fifth album. Self-financed sessions are deliberately done by long-handed recording labels and the music industry in general, and Reef enjoys the opportunity to return to their more basic initial approach to making music. In an interview with BBC Jack said "This is a louder voice, like when we first came out - a deep voice, heavy, I really liked it." While they had a lot of new material, Sony forced Reef to use only about a third of this material as part of the best offer titled Together - The Best of Reef released in January 2003. Jack Bessant denounced. lack of complete support from Sony and Kenwyn House called the release a "death kiss." Many fans who feel this new material is their best work for some time.

In late 2001, Reef played the Surfers Against Sewage Christmas Ball, in Bournemouth. They had previously played the SAS summer ball in 1995 in Newquay.

In January 2003, their original drummer, Greensmith, quit the band the night before a big tour in the UK, and when the biggest hits were released. He was replaced by a relatively unknown Nathan Curran. Curran also drum for Jaxx Basement and R & amp; B acting, Lady Sovereign.

On this tour Live DVD was recorded at Carling Academy Bristol. Around this time Reef also appeared on the BBC covering programs that include Black Sabbath's "War of Pigs", which appeared as B-side to "Waster", the last single of Reef, and their only single on the record label Snapper Music.

Leading Falmouth Regatta Week, on August 15, 2003, was to be the last appearance of Reef, before the band split up.

In total they have eight Top 20 UK singles.

"Place Your Hands" remains a party favorite and compilation. Reef played this little parody for Chris Evans' event TFI Friday in the late nineties, for a feature called 'It's Your Letters'. Evans claimed that the band had contacted him to stop playing the clips, as fans apparently sang together in the gigs, but these allegations were largely unfounded. But Evans later denied claims that he was wrongly quoted. Indeed, the band has written to Evans, but Gary Stringer explains it differently, "We do not want people to think it's all about" and keep on "... he went on television and said we stormed off the stage every time someone in the crowd sang but nobody sings that version, I think he thinks his influence and power are far wider than it really is. "

They also played at the Reading Festival in 1999 and have performed several times at the Glastonbury Festival, and the local branch held by Pilton Party every year in September for the locals.

Change direction (2004 - present)

Coral takes a long break from their constant tour. Stringer appeared at the Bristol Academy as a guest DJ on February 28, 2004.

On April 3, 2006 Martin Gilks, their former manager and drummer The Wonder Stuff, was killed in a motorcycle accident. He died at the age of 41, from an internal wound at St George's Hospital, Tooting, London. Gilks manages Reef with his brother Tank, alongside other bands, through their management company Furtive Mass Transit Systems. The original reef line-up was reformed to play three songs on a memorial in April 2006.

House formed a short project called McArthur, while Greensmith embarked on a tour with his new band, Kubb fronted by vocalist Harry Collier, former funk band Cornari Rootjoose. Kubb released their first album in 2006, and during spring 2007 they wrote material for their second album. In March 2007, he was recruited as a member of the Carbon/Silicon tour, a rock duo composed of punk rock musician Mick Jones of The Clash and Tony James of Generation X.

In 2006, "Come Back Brighter" was named the third best indie song of all time by The Hits; the band was reported as "happy and honorable".

House is also a teacher and judge at Brighton's Institute of Modern Music.

Stringer and Bessant formed the new band "Them Is Me". Other members include Jonas Jalhay on guitar (other bands: Lady Sovereign, Imma) and Nathan "Tugg" Curran on drums (ex-Reef, Basement Jaxx, Kano). Stringer and Bessant continue with their original roles as singers and bass players respectively. After training in London during the summer, they played their first show at a Sandsifter bar in Gwithian near Hayle, Cornwall, on September 14, 2007. After several low-key places in Cornwall, they recorded some demo songs at a recording studio in Monmouth.

Stringer and Bessant have an acoustic project called "StringerBessant" with both musicians playing an acoustic guitar. Their debut album "Yard" was released on "Xtra Mile Recordings" on July 12, 2010.

In April 2010, Reef held a reunion tour consisting of six concerts in the UK. The warming appearance at The Monto Water Rats in London, was the first in seven years. In May 2012 they play at the Lakefest festival. and on July 29, Reef features the annual Steelhouse Festival at Ebbw Vale, Wales.

On April 10, 2014, Kenwyn House announced he would leave Reef to concentrate on working with his new band, Goldray, and that his last appearance with Reef would be held on April 20th. On May 7, 2014 Jesse Wood, Guitarist for Ronnie Wood Band and Ronnie Wood's son was hired to replace Kenwyn House.

In 2014, Gary Stringer and Jack Bessant (as part of the StringerBessant project) they performed songs with Czech pop singer Anna K.

From August 21st to October 9th, Reef toured the UK, culminating in a sold-out show at Guildhall in St. Louis. Ives, Cornwall. This last appearance was recorded in preparation for a live album and a new DVD. For some numbers, the band brought a supportive choir from the Academy of Music and Theater Arts (AMATA) at Falmouth University. Glow producers George Drakoulias and Gary Stringer spoke to BBC Radio Cornwall about a tour for a venue on David White's morning show.

In March 2016 the band released the single "How I Got Over", debuting the song on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2. The single featured a gospel choir recorded in Los Angeles and a video show surf band in Cornwall.
