Histori

Crest was introduced in the United States as "Fluoristan" in 1954, because it contains stannous fluoride. In 1955, the product name was changed to "Crest with Fluoristan". Toothpaste compositions have been developed by Drs. Muhler, Harry Day, and William H. Nebergall at Indiana University, and patented by Nebergall. Procter & amp; Gamble pays royalties from the use of patents and thus finances a new dental research institute at this university ("Crest House"). The active ingredient Crest was converted in 1981 into sodium monofluorophosphate, or "Fluoristat". Today, Crest toothpaste uses sodium fluoride, or "Dentifrice with Fluoristat"; Crest Pro-Health uses stannous fluoride again and bleach abrasives together called "Polyfluorite". Crest accepted by the American Dental Association (ADA), as well as equivalent dental associations in other countries.

One of the famous advertising campaigns of this brand was in the late 1970s and early 1980s, in which animated commercials featured "Cavity Creeps," a group of gray and cursed humanoid beings determined to destroy the town of Toothopolis essentially an archipelago city protected by a very large tooth wall), with their signature war cry "We Make, Hole In Teeth!" They were defeated many times by "Tim Crest", a group of people dressed in Crested-themed jumpsuits, who used a giant toothbrush and Crest tube to not only ward off Cavity Creeps but also protect the walls. The team will encourage children at the end of each ad to "watch the treats and see your dentist" so they can fight cavities "like Tim Crest".

The Crest brand has also been associated with about twenty brands of dental products, including toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, dental floss, and tooth whitening products called Crest Whitestrips. Examples of toothpastes include Crest Pro Health, Crest 3D White, Crest Tartar Protection, Crest Whitening, and Scented Toothpaste. From 2004 to 2010, Crest sold dental floss under the Crest Glide brand, now called Oral-B Glide. The original Crest logo was designed by Donald Deskey.

In 2014, Crest Fresh and White was introduced as a replacement for the discontinued Gleem brand.

Dental coloring

Crest Pro-Health gargle contains Cetylpyridinium chloride which is known to cause dye staining in about 3 percent of users. Crest has noted that this staining is actually an indication that the product is working as intended, because the stain is the result of dead bacteria in the teeth. Crest stated that because of the low incidence of staining, it is not necessary to label Pro-Health gargle as potential tooth staining. However, after many federal class action complaints and lawsuits, which were later dismissed, the mouthwash now contains labels that warn consumers of their potential to stain teeth.

Reduce preterm birth

The use of Crest Pro-Health mouthwash during pregnancy has been shown to be associated with a decrease in preterm delivery, perhaps because mouthwash reduces the severity of periodontal disease, which is directly associated with preterm delivery.
