The American Youth Soccer Organization ( AYSO ) is one of the two premier national youth soccer organizations in the United States for children aged 4 to 19. Over 50 years AYSO was founded as a nonprofit soccer organization in Torrance (suburb of Los Angeles, California) at Jefferson Elementary School in 1964 with nine teams. Today the organization claims membership of over 50,000 teams, with over 630,000 participants.
AYSO is headquartered in Torrance, California and has developed a local program known as "Regions" in all 50 states, the US Virgin Islands and Trinidad and Tobago. The organization is run mainly by volunteers at its local level, with about 60 employees paid at its national headquarters.
The leading players who started their careers in the AYSO program include Landon Donovan, Carlos Bocanegra, Julie Foudy, Eric Wynalda, Shannon Boxx, Brian Ching, Alex Morgan, Christian Graczyk, Natasha Kai and Amy Rodriguez.

Structure
AYSO is a California nonprofit corporation. Local programs, called Regions, are not included separately. However, they are given significant autonomy in their operations management, as long as they are in accordance with AYSO's Household Rules, National Regulations and Regulations, and Policy Statements. Each Territory is administered by the Regional Commissioner in relation to the Regional Council. The Regional Group at close range consists of Area , which is managed by the Area Director in conjunction with the Area Council. The areas are grouped into 14 Sections , each managed by the Section Director along with the Board Section. In addition, some Areas run directly by the National Office, especially those outside the United States, are part of the so-called "Section 99."
The AYSO management board is the National Board of Directors (NBOD), which operates equally with other boards of directors. In addition, AYSO also has a number of National Commissions, and each Chairman, provides the National President and National Board of Directors with advice and recommendations on training, arbitration, management, tournaments, marketing, eAYSO and development. The recommendations include an analysis of the impact of proposed or actual program changes including financial and financial costs and impacts at the national and local levels; on specific disciplines and practice communities; on other disciplines and national programs; on the stands and perceptions of AYSO as a national organization in the larger soccer and sports community and in other potential or actual partners and like-minded organizations.

Program
Training Program
The AYSO Training Program provides training and certification resources to volunteer trainers. This program is designed to promote one of the 6 AYSO Philosophies, namely "Positive Coaching". The age-specific training course provides training for trainers at every level of experience using manuals, handouts and outlines, complemented by local instruction programs, camps and clinics held throughout the country, throughout the year.
Pioneer Program
The AYSO Pilot Program provides training for volunteer referees in more than Just the Laws of the Game to help ensure the prescribed game is safe and fun for everyone: players, coaches, spectators, and referees. There are six levels of AYSO referee training with USSF cross certification. Training for instructors, administrators and referee assessors is provided using online resources including videos and workbooks for new referees added by local instruction. The AYSO Licensing Program also includes a youth refereeing program. The youth refereeing program gives the children a chance to get hours of service.
Program Management
The AYSO Management Program is designed to facilitate the smooth running of AYSO at the local level by providing practical management training for its volunteers. Introduction, Intermediate and Advanced Regional Management courses teach AYSO league administrators how to manage their local programs. AYSO also provides an in-depth operational manual to assist administrators at every level of their AYSO program. The Board and Staff Introductory Certification (BASIC) audiovisual presentations provide regional volunteers a basic understanding of their duties.
AYSO EXPO
AYSO EXPO is an educational conference held annually for every geographical section of AYSO. They provide Workshops, training seminars, motivational speakers, vendor shows and forums for the exchange of ideas and information among volunteers and AYSO staff. The 2015 AYSO EXPO for Section 6 was held in Madison, Wisconsin. EXPO 2013 is held at Washington D.C.
Very Important Programs (VIP)
The AYSO's Very Important Player (VIP) program offers children and young adults with disabilities the opportunity to play football at their own pace. Practices and games are tailored to their needs - with fewer and more flexible rules - enabling a successful sporting experience. Since 1991, AYSO has assisted Territories and Regions establishing VIP programs for physically or mentally handicapped players making it difficult to participate successfully in the first team. In 2014, more than 3,700 VIP players participated nationwide. To volunteer with the VIP Program, one must complete the Safe Haven Training.
Safe Haven Child & amp; Volunteer Protection Program
AYSO Safe Haven Child & amp; The Volunteer Protection program trains and certifies volunteers and staff in their positions through the AYSO Safe Haven program, AYSO volunteers are provided with protection under the federal Volunteer Protection Act of 1997. Volunteer applications and the AYSO screening process reduce the likelihood of abuse when children participate in AYSO soccer program.
Play Extended
In some Regions, after the regular open-season signing ends, the All-Star team and tournament teams are set up in a separate division of the league's most skilled players. Other Regions and Territories have parallel "game additional" programs that operate in conjunction with the standard main program. Different levels are called Regional, Area, and Section teams.
On May 4, 2009, AYSO announced the launch of AYSO FLEX "AYSO FLEX". AYSO . Areas and Areas are permitted to be applied to the pilot "Extra" program, to operate in conjunction with the standard main program. Under the Extra program, there are two options: "Concurrent", where players must play in standard primary programs to participate in Extra; and "Side-by-Side", where players only participate in one or the other program.
History
AYSO was co-founded by Hans Stierle and Bill Hughes with the support of Ted McClean, Ralph Acosta and Steve Erdos in 1964. Stierle organized a youth soccer game for Los Angeles Soccer Club, a German club in North Hollywood playing against other local ethnicities. (mostly European) clubs.
To avoid cross-town travel to the game, Stierle thinks of getting a boy on his Torrance outskirts who are interested in the world's most popular game. The first AYSO League starts with nine teams, and emphasizes Open Registration: "Anyone can sign up; you do not have to be a member of any ethnic club."
Tim Stierle himself has a strong player from the LA Soccer Club team (including Sigi Schmid, who then plays and trains at UCLA and trains Los Angeles Galaxy and Seattle Sounders FC), and wins or ties almost all his games. Even for things and making the experience more competitive and fun for other teams, Balanced Team policies are adopted, where stronger players are distributed around the league. It has a slightly aberrant effect, as some weaker players who previously played every minute were forced into the bench by newly arrived stars. To counter this, the "Everyone Plays" policy is adopted, which mandates at least half the game for all players. That, in turn, caused the AYSO game to have a special time for substitutions so they could be monitored: midway through the first half, part time, midway through the second half, and for injury.
