This group was formed in 1964 and was originally known as Gary & amp; the Playboys. Producer Snuff Garrett saw them perform at Disneyland and he took them to the studio to record the single "This Diamond Ring". He also has the band changed their name to Gary Lewis & amp; Playboys to capitalize on Gary's famous father, comedian/actor Jerry Lewis. The success of this single makes them record an entire album that mostly includes popular songs by Kinks, Bobby Rydell, Coasters, and others. This album is the second highest original album of their career. The single "This Diamond Ring" launched a series of seven Top 10 hits for the group.
The album is somewhat notorious for marking the start of a successful long career for musicians Al Kooper and Leon Russell.

Dispute related musician on album
Over the years, there has been much discussion about the role of various musicians used in the album sessions. Garrett used The Wrecking Crew as a session player throughout the album. Lewis has stated in the interview:
"So we went to the studio, we cut the base line. The only other person from the Crew Crew that we had there when we did the basic track was Hal Blaine, and he played Tympanis on" Diamond Ring "".
Producer Garrett remembers it differently, stating:
"I'm not using The Playboy at all except as an extra note."
There were also questions about whether Carol Kaye donated the bass on some songs.
