Plot

Sailor Moon (1992-1993)

A 14-year-old sailor boy named Usagi Tsukino meets a magical cat named Luna. Luna gives Usagi the ability to transform into her supernatural alter ego - Sailor Moon - tasked with finding the princess of the moon and fighting the evil forces of the Dark Kingdom. The Dark Kingdom - led by Queen Beryl - summoned various monsters called Youma to absorb energy from humans and feed them to the evil entity known as the Queen of Metarians. They are also looking for Silver Crystal ( Maboroshi no Ginzuish , Phantom Silver Crystal ") , a gem capable of unlimited power.

While Usagi fights against the Dark Kingdom, he joins other girls who also wake up as Sailor Sailors: Ami Mizuno (Sailor Mercury) is shy but intelligent, hot miko Rei Hino (Sailor Mars), Makoto Kino is tomboy but romantic (Sailor Jupiter ), and idolized idol Minako Aino (Sailor Venus). Minako joins Artemis, his cat advisor, and Luna's partner. The Sailor Warriors are often supported by the mysterious Tuxedo Mask whose civil form is Mamoru Chiba, a student who became Usagi eventually engaging romantically.

After constantly foiling the Dark Kingdom and defeating some of his generals, Usagi woke up as the princess of the moon - Princess of Serenity - and obtained the Silver Crystal. However, Mamoru is captured by the Dark Kingdom and brainwashed to work for them. The Sailor Soldiers learn about their past lives in the Silver Millennium, an ancient kingdom on the moon. The Sailor Warriors serve as friends and guards of Serenity, and Serenity falls in love with a prince from Earth named Endymion (Mamoru's past identity). However, the Dark Kingdom attacks and destroys the Silver Millennium, resulting in the death of Serenity, Endymion, and Sailor Warriors. Mother Serenity - Queen of Serenity - uses the power of Silver Crystal to defeat the Queen of Metaria and end the war. He also uses crystals to send falls into the future to be reborn on Earth, hoping to give them a second chance in peace.

The Sailors' Army finally determined the location of the Dark Kingdom in the Arctic and traveled there. However, Usagi's friends were killed by trying to protect him from Queen Beryl's monsters. Usagi faced Mamoru himself and forced to drop him. Using Silver Crystals, she then faces Queen Beryl (who has fused with the Queen of Metarians). Defeat him with the help of the Sailors Spirit Fall and the strength of Crystal Silver. He then uses the last of the Silver Crystal powers to awaken the Sailor and Mamoru Soldiers with one hope that they can all live a normal life again. Everything on Earth returned to normal, and no one (but Luna and Artemis) retained any memories of this event. Sailor Moon R (1993-94) )

Some time later, a pair of extraterrestrials named Ail and Ann descend to Earth with a Tree of Hell that feeds on human energy. Ail and Ann summon monsters from cards - called the Cardians - to prey on humans. To defend themselves from these attacks, Luna and Artemis returned the memories of Sailor's soldiers. Eventually, Ail and Ann are defeated, see the error of their way, and return to space with Makai Tree. During this event, Mamoru can reclaim her lost memories and start a romantic relationship with Usagi.

Shortly after this incident, a pink-haired girl named Chibiusa fell from the sky. Chibiusa travels from the future to find the Silver Crystal and use it to save his parents. He was followed by the Black Moon Clan, a new enemy force that tried to kill him. Finally, the Sailor Army and the Tuxedo Mask traveled with Chibiusa to a future where Usagi ruled the Tokyo Crystal as Neo-Queen Serenity. They learn that Chibiusa is actually the daughter of Usagi and Mamoru, and they also met Sailor Pluto who guarded the Space-Time Door. Eventually, the Sailor warriors fought against Wiseman, the dark force that manipulated the Black Moon Clan with the intent of destroying the Earth. Chibiusa was able to summon Silver Crystal's future and assist in the destruction of Wiseman. After that, Chibiusa returns to her own time, now free of Black Moon Clan corruption.

Sailor Moon S (1994-1995 )

Some time later, Sailor warriors confront Death Busters, an evil organization that summoned a monster called Daimons to steal the Heart Cry from humans. Their goal is to find three specific Heart Crystals that contain special Talisman. Joining the Sailor Army are Haruka Tenoh and Michiru Kaioh, who each operate as Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune. Both are also looking for Talisman for different purposes and come to conflict with other Sailor Soldiers. Sailor Pluto returns to the present as Setsuna Meioh; Chibiusa also returns, now wearing her own magic girl identity, Sailor Chibi Moon.

The Death Busters eventually discover that Haruka and Michiru hold two of the Talisman and get them at the expense of their lives, but Setsuna - who holds the third - revives them. The Talisman created the Holy Grail, allowing Usagi to obtain a second form: Super Sailor Moon. The Death Busters intentions then change to harvest Crystal Hearts en masse to revive the evil entity known as Mrs. 9. Chibiusa also befriends a sickly girl named Hotaru, unaware that she is the daughter of the leader of Death Busters, Professor Tomoe. Unknown to him, Hotaru is also Sailor Saturn, a Sailor Soldier who is able to destroy and regenerate the entire planet. Haruka, Michiru and Setsuna feared that his resurrection would result in the destruction of the Earth and begged Usagi to kill him.

Madame 9 is revealed to have been in Hotaru's body and awakened after stealing Chibiusa's Heart Crystal. He then tricks Usagi into submitting the Holy Grail, allowing him to summon Pharaoh 90 to destroy the Earth. Hotaru awakens as Sailor Saturn and intends to sacrifice himself to stop Pharaoh 90, but Usagi is able to activate his Super form to destroy Pharaoh 90 and save Hotaru. After that, Hotaru was reborn as a baby and returned to his father, now freed from the influence of Death Busters.

Sailor Moon SuperS (1995-1996 )

Chibiusa remains in this day to practice as a Sailor warrior. He meets an alicorn named Pegasus who forms a secret relationship with him through his dream. Pegasus also helps the Sailor Soldiers by upgrading them to Super permanent forms and lending his strength when called by Chibiusa. The new power is used to fight Dead Moon Circus, a mysterious circus troupe that targets people with beautiful dreams. By looking into their Mirrored Dreams, they hope to find dreams where Pegasus is hiding, believing Pegasus has a Gold Crystals. With this crystal, the lord of the Dead Moon Circus - Queen Nehelenia - can be freed from the mirror he was sealed.

Queen Nehelenia was once her own empress queen absorbed by pride. For fear of losing her beauty, she spends the dreams of her subject to stay young. He searched for Gold Crystals in possession of a priest named Helios (the true form of Pegasus) and sealed in a mirror by Queen Serenity as a result. Queen Nehelenia formed Dead Moon Circus and used Zirconia as a proxy for tracking Pegasus. Although he got the Gold Crystal, he was betrayed by the Amazoness Quartet that gave the crystal to Chibiusa. Using crystals, Queen Nehelenia is defeated and begins to wilt with age, forcing her back into the mirror she once sealed. Helios returned to his native world, Elysion.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars (1996- 1997)

Queen Nehelenia returns when Sailor Galaxia frees her and encourages her to take revenge against the Sailor Army. He targets Mamoru and puts a curse on him that will eventually kill him and remove Chibiusa from his existence. The Seafarers entered the dimension of Queen Nehelenia's nightmare to stop her. Usagi finally came to pity the fate of Queen Nehelenia and was able to get rid of her negativity by activating her final form, Eternal Sailor Moon.

Shortly after this incident, Mamoru left for the United States to study abroad while Usagi and his friends entered high school. Chibiusa also returns to his own time. A group of enemies called Sailor Animamates - led by Sailor Galaxia - began targeting humans for their Star Seed (which functions as a human life force). Usagi is also aided by Starlights Sailor - Kou Seiya (Sailor Star Fighter), Kou Taiki (Sailor Star Maker), and Kou Yaten (Healer Star Sailor) - disguised as an idol group called Three Lights. The Starlights are looking for their ruler, Princess Kakyuu. A young girl - nicknamed Chibichibi for his inability to say anything other than "chibi" - also appeared and started living with Usagi.

The past of Sailor Galaxia was finally revealed. He once ended the Sailors War by sealing Chaos - the source of all evil - in his body. Unable to resist the influence of Chaos, he separates his Star Seed from his body, and it takes the form of Chibichibi. Sailor Galaxia stole Star Seed from Usagi's friend, which resulted in their death. This included Mamoru who was targeted before he arrived in the United States. Chibichibi turns into Sealing Sword and urges Usagi to kill Sailor Galaxia. However, Usagi instead used the good in his own heart to free Sailor Galaxia from Chaos corruption, effectively reviving all Sailor Soldiers whose Star Seeds were taken. With a normal recovery, Usagi and Mamoru share a kiss under a full moon.

Production and broadcasting

Naoko Takeuchi developed the anime Sailor Moon for one season. Due to the popularity of the season, Toei Animation asked Takeuchi to continue drawing his manga. At first, he struggled with developing another story line to extend the series due to Toei's request. The basic idea of the second season, introducing Sailor Moon's daughter from the future, came from her editor, Fumio Osano. Sailor Moon was adapted from 52 chapters of the series published in Nakayoshi from 1991-1997 and directed by Junichi Sat ?, Kunihiko Ikuhara and Takuya Igarashi. It aired in Japan on Asahi TV on March 7, 1992, taking over the timeslot previously held by Goldfish Warning! , and ran for 200 episodes to its conclusion on February 8, 1997.

Since manga is often published during anime production, anime will only be left behind by manga by one or two months. As a result, "anime follows the manga storyline fairly closely." Takeuchi has stated that due to the production staff of most of Toei's men, he feels that the anime version has "a slightly male perspective."

Sailor Moon sparked a very successful merchandising campaign with over 5,000 items, contributing to international requests and translations into multiple languages. Sailor Moon has become one of the most famous anime properties in the world. Due to the revival of popularity in Japan, the series was re-aired on September 1, 2009. The series also began to be republished in Italy in Autumn 2010, receiving permission from Naoko Takeuchi, who released a new artwork to promote his return.

Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon consists of five separate seasons, titled Sailor Moon , Sailor Moon R , Sailor Moon S , Sailor Moon SuperS and Sailor Moon: Sailor Stars , respectively. Each season roughly corresponds to one of the five major story arcs of the manga, following the same general storyline and including most of the same characters. Toei also developed five special animated shorts.

The anime series is sold as 20 volumes in Japan. By the end of 1995, each volume had sold about 300,000 copies.

English production and broadcasting

In 1995, after a bidding war with Toon Makers, who wanted to produce an American live-action/animated hybrid adaptation, DIC Entertainment (now DHX Media) licensed the first two seasons of Sailor Moon for English-language liberation at North America. The Mississauga-based Optimum Productions were hired to dub anime. Bob Summers wrote a new background score. DIC has mandated cuts for content and lengths, which reduced the first 89 episodes into 82. Their adaptations were created to capitalize on the success of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

The series aired in Canada on August 28, 1995 at YTV and in the first syndication in the US on September 11, but stopped production in November 1995 after two seasons due to low ratings. Despite moderate success in Canada, the US aired a fight in the midst of "dead" timeslots; the series airs in the US in the morning and evening time slots that Anne Allison describes as inappropriate for the target audience. In contrast, due to the dubbing process undertaken in Canada, this series is considered to be sufficiently Canadian to be played primetime as local content. After the series was canceled, a fan petition collecting over 12,500 signatures was created. This was then considered an early example of successful fan activism. In 1997, the re-running of the canceled dub began airing on the USA Network. In the same year, the production of the English series was followed by the last 17 episodes of the second season, Sailor Moon R , and aired in Canada from 20 September to 21 November 1997 to complete the remaining line of flow. The series was premiered on YTV in January 2004.

On June 1, 1998, reruns of this series began airing in the daytime programming block on Cartoon Network, Toonami. Due to the success of this rerun, the remaining seventeen episodes also aired on the block. In 1999, Cloverway Inc. once again contracted Optimum Productions to produce an English adaptation of Sailor Moon S and Sailor Moon SuperS with Pioneer Entertainment handling home video distribution. This Dub features fewer censorship and first broadcast on YTV in Canada, and then in Toonami in the United States. The dub finished airing in Toonami on 13 September 2002; in 2003, ADV and Pioneer lost distribution rights to the first 159/166 episode, as well as three films.

Due to the series' popularity revival in Japan, the re-run of the Sailor Moon series began on September 1, 2009 at Animax. In 2010, Toei negotiated to grant licenses and broadcast Sailor Moon in Italy on Mediaset, which resulted in an international revival. Later, Toei licensed the episode of Sailor Moon to countries where the show has not been shown before. On May 16, 2014, the manga and anime distributor of North America, Viz Media announced that they have won the anime series Sailor Moon , as well as three films and specials for an English-language release in North America, allowing Viz to restore deleted content of the first 89 episodes. Studio City, Studiopolis based in Los Angeles was also hired by Viz to re-dub the entire series. The series began streaming in the United States on Neon Alley and Hulu on May 19, 2014, and in Canada on Tubi TV on July 15, 2016. On November 28, 2014, the Australian manga and anime publisher, Madman Entertainment announced that they had returned. earned the rights to the anime series "Sailor Moon" for Australia & amp; New Zealand and will release this series in an unused format with Viz Media English adaptation in 2015. Madman Entertainment has previously held an Australian license for Sailor Moon at VHS & DVD to DiC lost English rights.

Editing

The original North American launch by Sailor Moon was the subject of heavy edits that resulted in large amounts of deleted content and changes that greatly changed the original work. Many of these changes include changing every aspect of the show from the character's name, clothing, scenes and dialogue from the show. Some nudity scenes and short showers were also censored, and all kinds of violence including violence against children were also removed. Homosexual characters, including Zoisite, Fisheye, Kunzite, Sailor Uranus, and Sailor Neptune were also censored, with two sexes changing from male to female, and the latter two being described as relatives rather than lovers. Changing the sex of a malicious character to a woman also has side effects to create a more diverse female characterization, because the wicked female character does not have the same body type.

Viz Media released returns all content that was cut from the original Japanese version, including scenes censored by Optimum Productions at the request of DiC and Cloverway.

Music

Takanori Arisawa compiled the score for Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon . Arisawa won the Golden Disk Grand Prize from Columbia Records for his work on the first series soundtrack in 1993. In 1998, 2000, and 2001 Arisawa won three JASRAC International Awards for most of the international royalties, largely due to the popularity of Seaman Month in other countries.

The opening theme, titled "Moonlight Densetsu" ???????? , M? Nraito Densetsu , lit. "Moonlight Legend") , used for the first 166 episodes. "Moonlight Densetsu" was originally performed by DALI for the first two seasons, and then by Lips of the Moon for the next two seasons. The second opening theme, used for the remaining episodes, is Sailor Star Song performed by Kae Hanazawa. The final closing theme, used for the last series in episode 200, is the Moon Lips version of "Moonlight Densetsu".

The DiC/Cloverway/Optimal English adaptation of the anime series uses melodies "Moonlight Densetsu", but with very different lyrics. At that time, it was unusual for the anime theme song to be translated, and this is one of the first themes to be repeated in English since the Star Blazers . The English theme has been described as "silly but interesting." The Japanese theme is a love song based on the relationship between Usagi and Mamoru ("born on the same Earth"), while the English Sailor Moon theme somewhat resembles the superhero national anthem.

"Moonlight Densetsu" was released as a single CD in March 1992, and was an "explosive hit." "Moonlight Densetsu" won first place in the Song category at Animage's 15th and 16th Anime Grand Prix. It came seventh in the 17th Grand Prix, and "Moon Revenge" from Sailor Moon R: The Movie , was in eighth place. Rashiku Ikimasho, the second closing song for SuperS , was placed eighteenth in 1996. In 1997, "Sailor Star Song", the new opening theme for Sailor Stars, came eleventh, and "Moonlight Densetsu" came sixteenth.

The international house release structure of Sailor Moon is complicated by the licenses and disposals of companies involved in producing and distributing work. In North America, Buena Vista Home Video distributes a portion of DiC's edited rank in six VHS tapes, containing two episodes selected from the first season, between 1996 and 1997. The tape was originally available exclusively through the Toys 'R' Us store, but then look at the wider distribution in other chains. A single VHS boxset titled The Doom Tree Series contains the first 13 episodes of Sailor Moon R also released. ADV Films later licensed home video rights to the first two seasons, and released DiC episodes to VHS and DVDs beginning in 2001, and then released an episode in Japanese with English subtitles in two DVD boxes in 2003. Pioneer Entertainment (later Geneon ) holds home video rights for the third and fourth seasons, and releases them to VHS in three formats (edited by dubbed English, English not dubbed, and Japanese with English subtitles) with bundled DVDs beginning in 2000. They then released both seasons in a bilingual box collection. Both ADV and Geneon licenses expired respectively in 2004 and 2006.

In addition, the first twenty-three episodes of their redub were aired on streaming sites, Hulu and Neon Alley, starting September 5, 2014. Movies

During the broadcast, three animated films Sailor Moon were produced. The films are usually released in December according to the winter holidays of Japanese schools. They are usually dual features paired with other anime films, and thus, usually an hour or less in length. The films themselves offer contradictions in chronology and design that make them incompatible with one continuity. The first was Sailor Moon R: The Movie in 1993, followed by Sailor Moon S: The Movie in 1994, and finally Sailor Moon SuperS: The Movie in 1995.

The three films were released in the US on home videos by Pioneer Entertainment, which released all three into VHS subtitles, edited dubbed VHS, and bilingual DVDs that have not been cut from 1999-2000. They are also featured on YTV in Canada and Cartoon Network in the US. All three films were later rescued for the home video release by Viz Media.

Reception and inheritance

Originally planned to run for just six months, the anime Sailor Moon repeatedly continued due to its popularity, ending after five years running. In Japan, it airs every Saturday night in prime time at 7 pm, and runs it very popular, with an average viewer rating of 11-12% for most of the running series. The commentator detects in the anime adaptation of Sailor Moon "more shonen tones", appealing to a wider audience than manga, aimed at adolescent girls. The media franchise became one of Japan's most successful, $ 1.5 billion in merchandise sales during the first three years. Ten years after the series was completed, the series was among the top thirty of the Top 100 anime polls on TV Asahi 'in 2005 and 2006. The anime series won the Animage Anime Grand Prix award in 1993. Sailor Moon i> fashion-dolls defeated Licca-chan's in the 1990s; Mattel connects this with the "action-mode" blend of the Sailor Moon storyline. The stuffed accessories include fashion items and Sailor Soldiers weapons.

Sailor Moon also became popular internationally. Spain and France became the first countries outside of Japan to feature Sailor Moon, beginning in December 1993. Other countries followed, including Australia, South Korea, Philippines ( Sailor Moon became one of the major attractions of its operator network, helping it become the country's third largest network), Poland, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Sweden, and Hong Kong, before North America took the franchise for adaptation. In 2001, the manga Sailor Moon was Tokyopop's best selling property, ahead of the next best selling title at least by a factor of 1.5.

Critics praised the anime series for its role as a strong friend, as well as for "flashy" characters who have different dimensions and aspects for them as the story progresses, and the ability to attract a wide audience. Writer Nicolas Penedo attributes the success of Sailor Moon with a fusion of shouji manga genre with wizarding girls with the Super Sentai battles team. According to Martha Cornog and Timothy Perper, Sailor Moon became popular because of the "highly planned action with fight scenes, rescue" and "emphasis on feelings and relationships", including some "sexy romance" between Usagi and Mamoru. Romansa Usagi and Mamoru have been seen as an archetype in which lovers "become more than their share of parts", pledged to be together forever. Instead, others see Sailor Moon as campy and melodramatic. Critics have chosen the use of plots, monsters, and stock recordings.

Patrick Drazen states that Sailor Moon has two types of criminals, "monster today" and "mind, human feeling." Although this is common in anime and manga, it's "almost unheard of in the West." Despite the series' apparent popularity among Western anime fandom, the dubbed version received a bad rating in the United States when it was initially broadcast on syndication and did not perform well in DVD sales in the UK. Anne Allison attributes the lack of popularity in the United States primarily to bad marketing (in the United States, the series was initially broadcast at times that did not fit the target audience - working days at 9:00 am and 14:00). Executives linked to Sailor Moon suggest that poor localization plays a role. British writers Helen McCarthy and Jonathan Clements went further, calling the nickname "indifferent", and suggested that Sailor Moon be put in a "dead" time slot for local interest. The British distributor, MVM Films, attributes low sales to the UK release only as a dub, and major retailers refuse to support events that lead to DVD releases that appeal to older children and anime fans.

Both the manga vector and anime anime series were released in Mexico twice in a fairly accurate translation on ImevisiÃÆ'³n (which is now Azteca), which also aired a nearly complete version of Saint Seiya , Senki , Candy Candy , Remi, Missing Girl , Sakura Card Chief and Detective Conan .

Due to anti-Japanese sentiment, most of the Japanese media in addition to anime are banned for several years in South Korea. Producers on KBS "did not even try to buy" Sailor Moon because the producers thought it would not pass the censorship laws, but in May 1997, Sailor Moon was airing on KBS 2 without problems and "very" popular.
