Kratos , also known as "Ghost of Sparta", is a video game character from the Sony Santa Monica God of War series, which is loosely based on Greek mythology, before moving on to mythology Norse. Kratos first appeared in the video game 2005 God of War , which led to the development of seven additional games that feature characters as protagonists. Kratos also emerged as the protagonist of the comic book series and the God of War novel. Character is voiced by Terrence C. Carson 2005-2013, with Christopher Hakim taking over the role in the 2018 continuation, God of War . Antony Del Rio voiced his character as a child in God of War: Ghost of Sparta ââi>.
Throughout the Greek era of the series, Kratos embarked on several adventures in an attempt to prevent a catastrophe or change his fate. He is usually described as unaware of all the others and arrogant in nature. He is often involved in ambiguous moral activities and extreme violence. A Spartan fighter, he became "Ghost of Sparta" after accidentally killing his family for the Ares trick. He then avenges the death of his family and becomes a God of War after killing Ares. Kratos is finally revealed to be a demigod and a son of Zeus, though Zeus later betrays Kratos. Vengeance is a central theme of the Greek era, and each installment provides additional information about Kratos's origins and relationships with his family and Olympian gods. In the Norse era of the series, Kratos takes a turn for good and finds himself in control of his anger, and learns how to truly father to his son, Atreus, against monsters and gods from the Norse region, among them enemies.
The God of War franchise is the main title for the PlayStation brand and Kratos is one of the most popular characters. This character has been well received by critics and has become a video game icon, a newcomer among the more established franchise characters, such as Mario, Link, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Lara Croft. This character is now associated with other products and already has a wide range of shining acting in PlayStation games beyond the God of War series .

Concepts and design
God of War the creator and director of the game David Jaffe is trying to create a character that looks brutal, but does not resemble a traditional Greek hero. The character will not wear traditional armor because Jaffe wants him to be individualistic. Although the idea of ââusing a masked character was fully approved, the concept was abandoned because the design looked soulless and lacked a clear personality. Some models include unusual elements, such as depicting her carrying a baby on her back, while others have excessive detail, such as hair and other "flowing objects".
Charlie Wen, director of visual development at God of War and God of War II, is responsible for designing Kratos. Wen said that his direction for Kratos design was heavily influenced by films on the same theme as pop culture, which made him sketch a series of Kratos drawings on a napkin in a restaurant, introducing the idea of ââa double-chained blade and Kratos' ultimate iconic design. Double-chain knives are selected as Kratos's signature weapons because they emphasize the nature of the animal's characters while also allowing the fighting to remain liquid. Jaffe said about the final version of the character, "[Kratos] may not fully feel at home in Ancient Greece from a costume perspective, I think he achieved a bigger goal of giving players a character they can play that really just let them be crazy and let go of the bad fantasies they have in their heads. "
Kratos's most striking feature is his white skin, the development of the story that gave him the title of "Ghost of Sparta." Other distinctive features include a scar on his right eye, and a large red tattoo transmitted from his left eye, circling his left body, and ending on his left shoulder. The tattoo was originally blue, but it was changed late in production. The scar is finally revealed as a result of a childhood encounter with the Olympian God, Ares, while the tattoo is a tribute to his dead brother, Deimos, who has the same birth mark. Other changes that occurred during this series included the temporary addition of divine armor when Kratos was a God of War, a stomach scar, an armor that enhanced the power-like ability called the All-God of War II ) , and Boots of Hermes ( God of War III ). According to the original manuscript of God of War, the character is 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 m) tall.
Kratos appearance can be changed in bonus game; finish the game on a certain difficulty level and in challenge mode will unlock the bonus costume. Some costumes are available exclusively through pre-orders and other promotions (eg God of War III , featuring three costumes based on initial sketches of characters) from the PlayStation Store. Although many of the bonus costumes are consistent with the theme of the story, others are funny or cute - such as the "Athena" and "Spud of War" costumes. 26 bonus costumes are available for use throughout the series and two are available in two games each ("God of War Armor" at God of War II and Ghost of Sparta âââ ⬠< ⬠, and "Deimos" in Ghost of Sparta ââem> and God of War III ).
For God of War in 2018, Barlog explains that Kratos must change his cycle of violence and learn to control his anger. He says that Kratos has made many bad decisions, which led to the destruction of Olympus, and wanted to know what would happen if Kratos made a good decision. The birth of Barlog's own child influences the idea of ââchanging the character of Kratos. The canceled live action series of Star Wars is also an influence. The bond between Kratos and his son is the heart of the game and Barlog says "This game is about Kratos who taught his son how to become a god, and his son taught Kratos how to be human again." Referring to Marvel Comics Hulk's character, Barlog says that in Kratos's case, "We've told The Hulk's story. We want to tell Banner's story now." Christopher Hakim, best known as Teal'c from Stargate SG-1 , replaces T.C. Carson as Kratos's voice in the game; Carson has voiced Kratos since the original God of War . Commenting in response to the change, Carson said, "Sony is going in a new direction."

Roles in the series God of War
Backstory and comic (via)
Throughout the series, Kratos is described as an antihero, often carrying out questionable actions. Though the backstory is seen in the original God of War, Kratos's childhood is revealed in Ghost of Sparta and the birth of his daughter is explored in God of War i> comic series. In Ghost of Sparta, it was revealed that the oracle had predicted that Olympus's death would not happen by the hands of the Titans - imprisoned after the Great War - but by a mortal, a marked soldier. The Olympians Zeus, Athena and Ares believe these warriors become Deimos, Kratos's sister, who has a strange birthmark. Ares and Athena interrupted the childhood training of Kratos and Deimos in Sparta and kidnapped Deimos. Kratos tries to stop Ares, but Ares greets him sideways and scratches it in his right eye. Taken for Domain of Death, Deimos was imprisoned and tortured for years by the death god, Thanatos. Convinced that Deimos would die, Kratos marked himself with a red tattoo, identical to his brother's birthmark, in honor of his brother.
Through flashbacks in the comic series written by Marv Wolfman, Kratos meets his wife Lysandra and they have a daughter named Calliope. After birth, Calliope was stricken with an epidemic. To save his daughter, Kratos is given a search to find Ambrosia Asclepius, a panacea with magical healing properties. The five gods enter into the bet with Ares: each chooses a champion to seek Ambrosia with champion Ares as Kratos. Kratos overcame all obstacles, including, among others, the Hades champion, Prince Barbar Alrik who eventually became the King of Barbarians, and therefore Kratos saved his daughter.
Through flashbacks in God of War, it was revealed that Kratos became the youngest captain of the Sparta army (also featured in comics), but has a power hunger. When Kratos was confronted with a total defeat at the hands of a barbaric mob headed by King Barbar, the Spartans summoned the Ares Olympian god for help. Kratos was given the Blades of Chaos, destroyed his enemies, and blindly followed Ares, killing hundreds of people in his name. After Ares tricked Kratos into killing his wife, Lysandra and his daughter Calliope at a temple dedicated to Athena, Spartan was shocked for his bloodthirsty and left the service to Ares. When the temple was burned, a village oracle cursed Kratos and cursed him for wearing "a sign of his bad deed"; the ashes of his family, who turned his skin white, earned him the title "Ghost of Sparta".
Ascension, Chains of Olympus , and God of War (2005)
In Ascension , it is revealed that because Kratos rejects Ares, it violates his blood oath to the god and thus, Kratos is imprisoned and tortured by three FERI. He is assisted by Orkos oath guard and finally overcomes and kills Furies. In order to be completely free of the Ares oath, Kratos was forced to kill Orkos, who begged Kratos to do so. Though free of his oath to the gods, he was flooded with memories of killing his family. He then vowed to serve other gods to receive forgiveness and relief from the nightmares of his past deeds, but he openly challenged.
In Chains of Olympus , Kratos was reluctant to help the gods when Helios was kidnapped, and publicly abandoned them when Persephone offered him a chance to reunite with his daughter. Kratos, however, was forced to reverse his decision when Persephone used the Titan Atlas in an attempt to destroy the world and in turn, the spirit of Calliope. Knowing that while the intervention will save Calliope, it will separate him from his family forever, Kratos bitterly kills Persephone, imprisons Atlas, and frees Helios.
At the time of God of War, Kratos has been serving the gods for ten years and is tired of his services and nightmares. When he faced his patron Athena, he advised him that if he killed the raging Ares, the gods would forgive his sins. With this selfish motive, he again agreed, and after discovering and using Pandora's Box, he succeeded. Although released from Ares influence, including the Blades of Chaos, Kratos is forgiven but not free from his nightmares. Kratos, disappointed and desperately trying to commit suicide but was saved by Athena, who guided him to Olympus. Awarded Blades of Athena, Kratos becomes the new God of War.
Comics (now), Ghost of Sparta , and Betrayal
The comic series also features a Kratos search for Ambrosia Asclepius. This time, he plans to destroy Ambrosia to prevent the Ares worshipers reviving their previous master. In this quest, Kratos overcame several enemies, including Chaos Giant Gyges, before destroying Ambrosia. Still haunted by his past vision in the Ghost of Sparta, and against Athena's suggestion, Kratos embarked on a quest to find his mother, Callisto, in the city of Atlantis. Callisto attempted to reveal the identity of Kratos' father before it changed against his desire to be an animal forced to kill Kratos. Before he died, Callisto suggested Kratos to find his brother Deimos in Sparta. Kratos first freed the Thera Titan from prison, which led to the destruction of Atlantis. In Sparta, Kratos knows the location of Deimos: Domain of Death. He finds and frees Deimos, who remains hostile to his brother. After the battle between siblings, Thanatos attacked Deimos, but after being saved by Kratos, the pair joined to fight their enemies. Although Thanatos killed Deimos, the god was in turn killed by Kratos. Kratos then returns to Olympus, angry at the gods. In Betrayal , Kratos has been shunned by other gods and decided to lead Spartan troops to defeat Greece. He is accused of mistakenly killing Argos, and he kills Ceryx, son of Hermes, for interfering in his quest for a true murderer, who fled.
God of War II
Kratos later joined the Spartans in Rhodes, intending to destroy. Zeus, however, weakens Kratos and deceives him to abandon his divine powers into the Blade of Olympus, which Zeus used to kill Kratos. Although he overcame all obstacles, Kratos was stunned over Zeus's betrayal and swore revenge when he died. Kratos falls into the Underworld, but is saved by the Gaia Titan. Moved to Tartarus with other Titans who survived after the First Great War, Gaia and his siblings searched for Zeus's death. Kratos, driven by anger at his betrayal, agreed to help the Titans and was ordered to find the Fate Sisters, who were able to return him to the time of Zeus's betrayal. Kratos became determined and utterly cruel - in pursuit of his goal, he injured Titan, killed some Greek heroes without hesitation, and deliberately sacrificed two scholars. The three Sisters of Destiny are killed when they oppose Kratos, who are ready to kill Zeus in the last confrontation. Zeus had just been rescued when Athena intervened and sacrificed himself for him; only then Kratos shows remorse. He learns from dying Athenians that Zeus is, in fact, his father, a fact that Zeus concealed because he wanted to avoid a repetition of what he did to his own father, Cronos. Kratos rejects the idea of ââa relationship and vows to kill Zeus and destroy Olympus. Encouraged by Gaia, Kratos used the power of Destiny to take the Titans before their defeat in the Great War, and with their help, invaded Mount Olympus.
God of War III
Though Kratos kills Poseidon, he is abandoned by Gaia when his first encounter with Zeus goes bad. Lost in the Underworld and now betrayed by the Olympians and Titans, Kratos learns from Athena's spirit, which also provides Blades of Exile, that he needs to find the Flame of Olympus, which is the key to defeating Zeus. Kratos kills the Titans and gods, ignoring the warning of his victim as he seeks the Flame. Realizing the key to placating Flame and reaching Pandora's Box (swallowed by Flame) is Pandora himself, Kratos comes to take care of Pandora, who reminds her of her lost daughter, Calliope. Kratos showed humanity as he tried to stop Pandora from sacrificing himself to extinguish the Flame, but reluctantly allowed the act when he said there was no other choice. Finding the empty box, and driven amok by Zeus ridicule, Kratos attacked his father. Although Gaia interrupts and tries to kill Kratos and Zeus, he is destroyed by Kratos, who then seems to defeat Zeus. Zeus returns in spirit form and attacks Kratos, who retreats to his soul. Kratos forgave himself for the sins of his past with the help of Lysandra. Pandora then shows up and tells Kratos that hope will save her. Kratos is revived and easily destroys Zeus. Athena faced Kratos and demanded that he restore the power of hope; fill in Pandora's Box. In unconditional action, Kratos refuses, stating that his need for retaliation has disappeared and pierced himself with the Blade of Olympus, which dissolved forces around the world for human use. Athena, disappointed with Kratos, takes out Blade and leaves as Kratos faints next to the Blade of Olympus. The post-credit scene shows a trail of blood that leads away from Blade in the presence of an unknown Kratos.
God of War (2018)
Years after the events of God of War III, Kratos ends up in ancient Scandinavia in the Norse region of Midgard with a young son named Atreus, who is unaware of his true nature. Kratos has left his blade, and uses a magic ax of war called Leviathan Ax which originally belonged to his second wife and Atreus's mother, Laufey, who just graduated and whom Kratos calls Faye. His last wish was to have his ashes scattered on the highest peaks of the nine realms. At the top of Midgard, they learn from MÃÆ'mir that the highest peak is actually in JÃÆ'ötunheim. Throughout their journey, they are confronted by ÃÆ'â ⬠sir god Baldur, Thor's brother whose son Modi and Magni helped their uncle, but was killed by Kratos and Atreus. Around this time, Atreus gets sick, and Kratos reveals to him that he is a god. Kratos also rediscovered his old weapon, Blades of Chaos, to fight against the creatures of Helheim because Ax Leviathan is useless there. Taking a knife, Athena appears and directs her about her past. The couple also received help from the Witch, later revealed to be the god Vanir Freya, Baldur's mother who had spelled an immortal spell on Baldur to protect her, but also caused him no longer feel pain or pleasure, which he hated. Kratos and Baldur eventually fought, where, the Baldur spell was broken. Kratos decides to let Baldur go, but Baldur tries to kill Freya, forcing Kratos to kill him. Freya vowed revenge against Kratos for killing his son and insulting Kratos for not revealing his troubled past to Atreus. Kratos decided to tell Atreus that he had killed other Greek gods, including his father Zeus, but he and Atreus had to learn from these experiences and not repeat the mistakes of the past. The two then travel to JÃÆ'ötunheim, where he learns that Faye is actually a giant, also makes a giant part of Atreus. It was also revealed that Faye originally named their son Loki, but Kratos preferred Atreus, which is the name of a respected Spartan friend. Giant is also called Kratos as FÃÆ'árbauti. At Midgard, Fimbulwinter began, and upon returning home, Atreus had a vision that Thor would come to them at the end of Fimbulwinter.

Reception
Kratos character got a positive response from video game publication. GameSpot regards Kratos as a "sympathetic antihero" and "badass", and describes him as an enchanting person for his unforgiving behavior, but adds that the slow-growing story offers the player "no understanding [of him]" in the early stages of the game. IGN said he was cruel, merciless and barbarous, noting the main character motive is retaliation and "all he wants is murder." IGN also states that in time players will start "loving and hating Kratos and hating Ares." GamePro says it is "Kratos' tragic death and brutal rise to the top of Mount Olympus that makes the original God of War so memorable." The PlayStation Universe says he's "definitely a unique character and a fighter to be reckoned with," and that the iconic "iconic anti-heroes of the PlayStation will certainly not be forgotten." Critics call Kratos's depiction in the God of War (2018), with many people praising his more nuanced and related personality compared to his earlier incarnations. Forbes writes how "Kratos is a character this time", calls her "fleshed-out" and "surprisingly interesting", while IGN feels that the game "transforms her from the previous game's flat manifestation of the bloodthirsty warrior cliches into someone who can stand shoulder to shoulder with some of my favorite protagonists in the media recently ". Similarly, Red Bull states that "God of War reflects the new and more nuanced Kratos because it is measured, in and as previously mentioned, complicated." Engadget, despite admitting it overkill, writes how "Kratos is more nuanced and shows more emotion in the game hours than he did in all previous trilogy".
At the Spike Video Game Awards 2010, Kratos was nominated for "Character of the Year" and was awarded the "Bigass Largest" award. She was included in the "All Time Greatest Video Game Hero" GameSpot contest and reached the "Elite Eight" round before losing to Mario. The 2011 Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition lists Kratos as the ninth most popular video game character. In 2011, Empire rated it as the 15th largest video game character. In 2012, GamesRadar put Kratos, "one of PlayStation's most popular representatives," as the "most memorable, influential and evil" protagonist in the game: "Being crazy is not an unusual feature among game characters, but driven by anger generated from his mistakes (slaughtering thousands, including - oops - his wife and daughter) Kratos kills with profound and convincing aggression that lifts him far beyond the status of a brain-death killing bot. "In 2010, Game Guru said that" almost everyone, even if they do not play the God of War game, will know about Kratos. "
Kratos has been included in some of the top list of video game characters: GamesRadar listed him as one of the 25 best new characters of the decade, stating that when he emerged initially to become a generic character, the player finally learned that he is "unstoppable of natural forces" and " broken, tragic human ". Knowing the talk of the God of War movie, IGN and UGO Networks listed Kratos as a worthy character for his own movie. In 2008, IGN listed it as one of the desired characters for the "main fight" game, featuring characters from all consoles and all games. She was on the best anti-hero list by IGN in 2012. In 2011, Complex listed her last few steps in a list of 50 "list of the craziest casualties in video games" on 30, 28, 24 , 14, and number one for his finishing moves in Hades, Hercules, Helios, Hydra, and Poseidon, respectively. The alternative costume "Milk Lover" from the original God of War is included in the "most numerous" alternative costume list from UGO. Kratos GameFront is registered in 2011 as one of the top five video game characters with the "biggest dad problems". Complex rated him the best fighting cameo game for his guest appearance at Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny and Mortal Kombat in 2012 and as the sixth most characters "video games" throughout 2013. Kratos' Blades of Chaos is included in the "15 Most Badass Swords in Game Game History" from GameSpot.
On the other hand, the character of Kratos has also been criticized. Prince of Persia producer Ben Mattes said in an interview that he considers Kratos a "super character, but it's black and white; his personality is pure anger, his dialogue is pure anger, his character design is pure anger. Jeremy Norm "Scott, the creator of the comic strips Hsu and Chan , stated in the Electronic Gaming Monthly that Kratos is average and" no , except as an avatar for players. " In 2009, IGN enrolled Kratos as the most overrated sixth video game character. Cheat Code Central also includes Kratos as the sixth most video game character in the top ten list in 2011.
