History
Ralston Purina (originally Ralston-Purina) traces its roots to 1894, when founder William H. Danforth founded Purina Mills feed company. William H. Danforth, partnering with George Robinson and William Andrews, entered the feeding business of livestock by establishing the Robinson-Danforth Commission Company. The name was changed to Ralston Purina in 1902. Its main brand for every animal is commonly referred to as "Chow"; "Purina Chow Chow", "Purina Chow Chow", "Purina Rabbit Chow", "Purina Pig Chow", and even "Purina Monkey Chow". Later, the company began producing cereals, which received support by Webster Edgerly, founder of Ralstonism, to market Ralston's breakfast cereal. Edgerly at the time promoted intake of whole grain cereals. This cereal became so successful that the company's name was changed in 1902 to Ralston-Purina Company.
In 1986, Ralston Purina sold Purina Mills, the US animal feed business, to British Petroleum. Purina Mills is now owned by Land O'Lakes. In 1994, Ralston's "human food" operation from Ralston Purina Company was spun into a new company called Ralcorp Holdings. In 1998, Ralston Purina separated its international livestock feed business as Agribrands acquired by Cargill in 2001. The animal feed business continues to use the Purina and Chow brands used by Purina Mills and Cargill for use in the US and internationally.
Merge with NestlÃÆ'à ©
Ralston Purina was the subject of an acquisition offer by Swiss-based Nestlà © à ©, whose Friskies brand is another US pet food brand. NestlÃÆ' à © S.A. and Ralston Purina announced in January 2001 a definitive merger agreement. Under the agreement, NestlÃÆ' à © acquired all shares of Ralston Purina (NYSE: RAL) at a price of US $ 33.50 per share in cash. The offer represents a premium of 36% of the closing price on Friday, January 12, 2001. The transaction has a corporate value of US $ 10.3 billion ($ 10.0 billion of equity plus $ 1.2 billion of net debt, minus $ 0 , 9 billion of financial investment).
Both companies see these great strategic transactions as an ideal way to capitalize on their combined knowledge, complementary strength, and international presence in the growing pet care market. Some pet food brands (eg, "Meow Mix") should be divested separately to meet antitrust concerns. The Purina brand is now created and marketed by a division of Nestlà © à © (NestlÃÆ' à © Purina PetCare) who is still headquartered in St. Petersburg. Louis.
Though primarily pet food companies, Ralston Purina also makes several other pet related products, such as the Tidy Cats brand and Cat waste News Yesterday, made from recycled newspapers, purchased from Edward Lowe Industries in 1990. Also, Purina has been honored several Canadian animals every year since 1968 in the Animal Hall of Fame. Recent applicants include police dogs who "rush and subjugate armed robbers".

They opened a store in a market like Moorhead, Minnesota, to test how the Midwestern market would accept the concept. They did well, but Ralston Purina decided not to enter the pizza franchise business and close all pilots by the end of 1987.

Logo
The "checkerboard" trademark Ralston Purina was introduced in 1902. Inspired by William Danforth's childhood memory of a family dressed in the same plaid fabric. The company headquarters is called Square Checkerboard. Danforth uses design as a visualization of the concept expressed in his book I Dare You, where he proposes four key components in life ("Physical," "Mental," "Social" and "Religious") to be balanced , and one area does not develop at the expense of the other. In 1921, the design inspired a pressed feed design in a cube, called "checkers".
