Prostitution in Belarus is illegal but is commonplace and is an administrative offense, not a criminal. Running brothels banned and involved in other ways of pimps can be punished up to 10 years in prison. UNAIDS estimates there are 22,000 sex workers in Belarus in 2016.

Official data for Vitebsk, Minsk, Grodno and Mogilev provinces in 1889 showed there were 50 brothels with 326 prostitutes working in them. The 1897 Russian census of 5 provinces in Belarus recorded 479 prostitutes.

According to official figures of the Ministry of Interior 2010, there are 1,930 women involved in prostitution in Belarus, about 637 of them are in Minsk. 780 people prosecuted for prostitution in 210.

Sex tourism

This country is a sex tourism destination. The government has tried to combat this with visa restrictions, but no visas are required for visitors from Russia, where most sex tourists come from. Most travelers travel to the country independently, but there are "sex tourism" organized from Turkey and Western Europe.

Russia is interested in casinos in the country, (Russia prohibits gambling and closes all casinos in 2009) and prostitution attached to many casinos. There are a number of high profile arrests in connection with prostitution in casinos. In 2012, art director and club manager Dank Minsk arrested and then club owner, Jury Da'ih ?, also arrested.

In 2009, a Turkish citizen in Belarus was allowed to jail for 7 years for arranging a sex tour from Turkey. A year later an accomplice was also sentenced to 7 years. Several Middle Eastern nationals have also been deported from Belarus for similar activities.

Sex trading

Belarus is a source, transit, and destination country for women and children who are victims of the sex trade. Belarussian casualties mainly trade in Russia and Belarus, as well as in Poland, Turkey, and other countries in Eurasia and the Middle East. Some Belarusian women who travel for foreign jobs in the adult entertainment industry and hotels are subjected to the sex trade. The government has identified victims of Belarus, Moldovan, Russia, Ukraine, and Vietnam exploited in Belarus.

Article 181 of the criminal law prohibits the sex trade and labor and impose penalties ranging from five to 15 years in prison in addition to confiscation of assets of offenders. The government reported an investigation into the sex trade in 2016 under the 181 article, compared with one in 2015, one in 2014, and six in 2013.
