Pengembangan dan produksi
In July 2011, series maker Vince Gilligan indicated that he intended to conclude Breaking Bad with the fifth season. In early August 2011, negotiations began with an agreement on the fifth season and the last possibility between AMC and Sony Pictures Television, the series production company. The AMC proposes a shortened fifth season (six to eight episodes instead of thirteen) to cut costs, but producers decline. Sony then approached another cable network about the possibility of taking its show if a deal could not be made. On August 14, 2011, a deal was made in which AMC updated the series for the last 16-episode season. Filming starts for this season on March 26, 2012. Filming for the second half of the season begins on December 7, 2012, where AMC sends players and cupcake crew adorned with characters and props used during the show.
Vince Gilligan explains that the season is divided on his request to have more time to write the last episode. Thomas Schnauz reveals that the authors initially tried to imagine an arch of 16 episodes before completing the first eight episodes, but most of these plans were removed when new plot dots appeared "that threw everything into a bit of turmoil."
Dean Norris has asked Gilligan to kill Hank during the first half of the season after being cast into a pilot comedy. However, Gilligan rejected his request, citing the importance of Hank in the last eight episodes.
