Plot
Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is a shiny 35-year-old sports agency working for International Sports Management (SMI). After experiencing life-changing changes about his role as a sports agent, he wrote a mission statement about the dishonesty felt in the sports management business and his desire to work with fewer clients resulting in better quality. In turn, SMI management decided to send Bob Sugar (Jay Mohr), Jerry protagonist, to fire him. As a result, both Jerry and Sugar call all Jerry clients to try and convince them not to hire another service. Jerry speaks to wide cardiac Arizona Cardinals recipient Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.), one of his clients who is not satisfied with his contract. He needs a $ 10 million contract for his family to live. Jerry tells him if he's injured for this season, he will not get any money from the Cardinals. Rod tests Jerry's determination through a very long phone conversation while Sugar is able to convince the rest of Jerry's clients to stick with SMI instead. Leaving the office, Jerry announced that he would start his own agency and asked if anyone would join him, which only 26-year-old single mother Dorothy Boyd (Renà ©  © Zellweger) agrees. Meanwhile, Frank "Cush" Cushman (Jerry O'Connell), the prospect of a superstar quarterback who expects to be the number one pick in the NFL Draft, initially also remained with Jerry after he made a visit to Cushman's home. However, Sugar was able to convince Cushman and his father to sign a contract with SMI over Jerry the night before the draft. Cushman's father implies that they decided to sign with Sugar over Jerry when they saw Jerry attend Tidwell; an African-American player, versus his son (a white player).
After a fight, Jerry broke up with his dissatisfied fiancé (Kelly Preston). He then turns to Dorothy, gets closer to his young son, Ray (Jonathan Lipnicki), and finally starts a relationship with him. Dorothy contemplates moving to San Diego because she has a safe job offer there, but she and Jerry agree to get married. Jerry concentrated all his efforts on Rod, now his only client, who proved very difficult to satisfy. Over the next few months, two direct harsh condemnation of each other with Rod claiming that Jerry was not trying hard enough to get him a contract while Jerry claimed that Rod did not prove himself worthy for the money he asked for. Rod asks Jerry advice to prove he's worthy of his contract. Rod played well and his team won. Meanwhile, Jerry's marriage to Dorothy gradually worsens and they finally part ways.
During the Monday Night Football game between the Cardinals and the Dallas Cowboys, Rod played well but appeared to receive a serious injury while capturing a winning touchdown, securing a place for the Cardinals in the playoffs. He recovers, however, and dances to the people of wild cheering. After that, Jerry and Rod embrace in front of other athletes and sports agents and show how their relationship has grown from a tight business to a close one, which is one of the points Jerry made in his mission statement. Jerry then flies back home to meet Dorothy. She then talks for a few minutes, telling him that she loves him and wants him in his life, which he receives. Rod later appeared on Roy Firestone's sporting event. Unbeknownst to him, Jerry has given him a $ 11.2 million contract with the Cardinals which enabled him to complete his footballing career in Arizona. The emotional-looking Rod thanked everyone and thanked Jerry profusely. Jerry talks to some other pro athletes, some of whom have read previous mission statements and honored his work with Rod.
The movie ends with Ray throwing a baseball ball into the air surprising Jerry. Jerry then discusses the possibility of Ray's career in the sports industry with Dorothy.
