Overview

The main categories of design used today are as follows: horizontal hammermills, vertical hammermills, shredders of a single slow-speed shredder type, dual design, triple and quad shafts, single-shaft or double axle shaft grinders, granulators, pig knives, raspers, mawlers, flails, crackermills, and refineries.

Some examples of materials that are generally shredded are: tires, metals, junk cars, wood, plastics, and garbage. There is no general use of industrial shredders because they can damage paper as well as wood, plastic, metal including the whole car depending on the size and design of the industrial shredder. Industrial shredders are typically used to process materials into different sizes for separation or to reduce transportation recycling costs but the main use is the improvement of materials by cutting metals, plastics, aluminum, metals and automobiles as well as waste materials such as municipal solid waste or nuclear waste, medical, hazardous waste including general waste.

Shredder industry is a shredder that can be used in industrial applications (not consumer applications). They can be equipped with various types of cutting systems: horizontal shaft design, vertical shaft design, single shaft, two axle, three shaft and four-shaft cutting system. These shredders are slow speed or high speed, and are not restricted to classified as industrial shredders with their speed or horsepower.

The world's largest used metal crusher was designed with 10,000 hp by Schnitzer steel group from Portland, Oregon in 1980. The 9,200 hp (6,860 kW) Lynxs at the Sims Metal Management plant at the mouth of the Usk River in Newport, Wales have access by road, rail and sea. Can process 450 cars per hour.
