The graduate certificate is the educational credential that represents the completion of specialist training at the college or university level. Postgraduate certificates may be awarded by the university upon completion of a particular course that demonstrates the mastery of a particular subject area. The postgraduate certificate represents training at different levels in different countries and may be at the undergraduate or master's degree level.

The graduate certificate (GradCert, GCert, GradC) is a higher education qualification at the same level as a bachelor's degree but more limited in scope, taking less time to complete - typically between one-third and two-thirds of the academic year (or full-time equivalent). A longer working period (but still less than required for the degree) will lead to a diploma graduate.
Graduate certificates are positioned at Level 6 (undergraduate degree) from the Framework for higher education qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland , and at Level 9 or 10 (bachelor degree at regular or honorary degrees) from < i> A framework for a higher education institution qualification in Scotland . With regard to the European Qualification Framework, this is a 'first cycle' qualification on the same level of knowledge and challenge as a first degree or bachelor but without the same depth and breadth of the study. Successful students will usually show some, but not all, of the types of skills, knowledge and abilities that will be expected for Bachelor candidates. Therefore this certificate is not considered the 'end of cycle' qualification (this only shows some 'first cycle' learning outcomes).
Postgraduate certificates are available in a limited range of subjects typically associated with work, such as psychology, management, counseling or law.
Graduate certificates are usually taken by those who have graduated with a bachelor's degree in another discipline (hence the name). This qualification should not be equated with a postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma, which is a master's level qualification, or with a Higher Education certificate, which is a lower-level qualification normally taken by those who have no previous HE qualification.

United States
In the United States, a postgraduate certificate may be awarded by the university upon completion of a particular course that demonstrates the mastery of a particular subject area. The postgraduate certificate is a training at the Masters or doctoral level, generally consisting of 12 to 18 units of the course semester. An accredited undergraduate degree in a related field is a standard prerequisite for admission to the postgraduate certificate program. In some cases, a postgraduate certificate may represent the part of the course required to earn a Master's or Doctorate degree.
