A wiring diagram is a simple conventional representation of the electrical circuit. This shows the circuit components as a simplified form, and power and signal connections between devices.
The wiring diagram usually provides information about the relative positions and settings of devices and terminals on the device, to assist in building or servicing the device. This is not like a schematic diagram, where the components 'interconnection arrangements on the diagram are usually incompatible with the physical location of the components' on the finished device. The pictorial diagram will show more details of physical appearance, whereas wiring diagrams use more symbolic notation to emphasize interconnection of physical appearance.
A wiring diagram is often used to solve problems and ensure that all connections have been made and that everything is present.

The architectural cable diagram shows the approximate location and interconnection of the container, lighting, and permanent electrical services in the building. An interconnecting wire line may be displayed approximately, where particular containers or equipment must be on public circuits.
Wiring diagrams use standard symbols for wiring devices, usually different from those used in schematic diagrams. The electric symbols not only show where something will be installed, but also what type of device is being installed. For example, the surface ceiling light is indicated by a single symbol, the hidden ceiling light has a different symbol, and the surface fluorescent lamp has another symbol. Each type of switch has different symbols and so do various outlets. There is a symbol that shows the location of the smoke detector, the doorbell rings, and the thermostat. In large projects, symbols can be numbered to display, for example, panel boards and circuits connecting devices, and also to identify some types of equipment that must be installed in those locations.
A set of wiring diagrams may be required by an electrical inspection authority to approve residential connections to a public utility power system.
The wiring diagram will also include panel schedules for circuit breaker panel panels, and riser diagrams for specialized services such as fire alarms or closed-circuit television or other specialized services.
