Virtual DJ (also known as VDJ ) is a suite of audio/video mixing software developed by Atomix Productions Inc. for use by mobile DJs and clubs. The software is also exclusively repackaged for Numark, called Numark CUE.
The package runs on a PC or Mac to allow a computer DJ to mix music or video, with or without an external controller. DJs can control software with MIDI controllers or use traditional DJ devices such as CDJs and DJ mixers with emulation software and CDs.

The first version appeared in July 2003. VirtualDJ is AtomixMP3 software, which was released for the first time in September 2000. Development for AtomixMP3 stopped shortly after VirtualDJ was released as a replacement. VirtualDJ is released in 5 different versions: VirtualDJ Home Edition (previously sold in stores, now released as a free edition), VirtualDJ Broadcaster (available online and in stores), VirtualDJ Pro Full (only available online), VirtualDJ Limited Edition ( free with the MIDI Controller selected), and VirtualDJ Pro Basic (budget alternative for VirtualDJ Pro without MIDI control). In May 2014 VirtualDJ 8 was released, which was completely rewritten.

Features
Starting with version 7.0, VirtualDJ supports up to 99 decks. 4-deck and 6-deck leather included in all editions of VirtualDJ 7. VirtualDJ offers mixing and scratching videos. Vinyl Emulation allows users to physically manipulate playback of digital audio files on a computer using a turntable as an interface. This allows the DJ to scratch, beatmatch, and perform other turntablism.
NetSearch is a feature introduced with VirtualDJ version 6.x. In some of these first releases it lets users access music and videos from content providers on the internet. Music and video will be streamed directly to the user deck, and no downloads are allowed, except for local web cache, which is protected by digital rights management. From the release of VirtualDJ 6.1 in May 2010 this model was replaced by a subscription model, with Grooveshark as a content provider.
MusicGroups is a feature added to VirtualDJ 6. MusicGroup collects track history, and publishes it on Virtualdj.com. A licensed user can create a single group of users themselves, or can join a multi-user group. Each MusicGroup page includes a mini-blog, with track history, as well as 20 songs played, and a saved playlist. Other users can comment to groups, and subscribe to groups. The software analyzes the playlist, and makes suggestions for what songs will be mixed next. The suggestion is based on what other DJs are playing around the world, with a stronger weight on MusicGroup that users subscribe to. In essence, a real-time track advisor is based on evaluating what other DJs around the world are mixing.
VirtualDJ provides two ways for DJs to broadcast their mixed sets to the internet. With an internal radio server, a DJ can broadcast from his own computer by publishing links generated by the software, which streams the mixture played. The software can also be broadcast to the webradio running Shoutcast or Icecast servers. Virtualreb based webradio has been running since 2005 under the name VirtualDJ Radio.
From VirtualDJ 6, the mapping to the MIDI or HID controller is changed. In earlier versions the mapping to the controller was done with a built-in mapmaker, or with a hard-coded DLL file created by a user (using C or any other programming language). VirtualDJ 6 introduces the VDJScript language, creating custom mapper for MIDI and HID controllers easier by editing the software mapper configuration, or by editing the XML file.
Reception
In 2010, Virtual DJ won the award for Best DJ Software at the 25th Annual International Music Dance Awards of the Winter Music Conference in Miami.
In 2013, Virtual DJ won the award for Best DJ Software at the 28th Annual International Dance of Music Awards, the Winter Music Conference in Miami.
