Thorntons is a British chocolate brand founded by Joseph William Thornton in 1911. Thorntons Limited has been owned by the Italian company, Ferrero SpA since 2015. Net income in the 2016 annual report is reported missing - Ã,  £ 30.8 million with decreasing staff numbers and number of stores across the UK. When Cadburys became part of a special non-confectionery group, Thorntons became the largest holding company in the UK; while it retained a small portion of its well-established toffee and fudge sales, the group shifted its specialty, after the post-war allotment ended, browned and expanded the vast range of Continental, Swiss and Belgian chocolates (along with new things and decorations) sales. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE Fledgling Index. While reducing the presence of high street, sales and production have increased and a small minority of its stores are starting up again or diversifying to become cafà © s. In June 2015 Thorntons was bought by Ferrero SpA for £ 112 million. Thorntons changed their trade name from Thorntons PLC to Thorntons Ltd in Nov 2016 and now their registered office is Ferrero UK Ltd in Greenford, England.

2000s - trading difficulties

After a period of rapid expansion, the 2009 results showed the turnover increased to Ã, Â £ 214.8 million, but operating profit declined to Ã, Â £ 7.94 million. There is still significant seasonal influence on sales demand and a number of strategies have been made to try to address this problem - however, 35% of sales are still within the seven weeks before Christmas and 10% more before Easter. This impact on manufacturing and services is significant, with temporary staff covering positions.

In January 2011, Jonathon Hart joined the business as CEO. Following a strategic review produced in June 2011, Thorntons announced it would close between 120 and 180 stores.

In June 2015 it was announced that Italian chocolate maker Ferrero would buy Thorntons for Ã, £ 112 million. Thorntons Ltd 75% owned by Ferholding Uk Ltd. Ferholding Uk Ltd is controlled by Giovanni Ferrero who holds more than 50% voting rights.

On February 17, 2018, a few days after one of the biggest trading days of this year, Valentine's Day, Thornton's shop in Cambridge closed after more than 25 years of operation.

Publicity

Some ad slogans:

"Chocolate Heaven Sejak 1911"

"That's Thornton to be reckoned with"

On April 3, 2007, Thorntons prepared what is considered the world's first edible billboard. The 14.5 ft by 9.5 ft (4.4 m 2.9 m) and 390 kg (860 ton) marks were erected outside their Covent Garden, London store, and eaten within 3 hours. The structure includes 10 brown rabbits, 72 giant brown eggs and 128 chocolate panels, each weighing 2 pounds. The publicity action was decided following a poor 2006 Christmas sale.
