A stiletto heel is a long, thin, high heel found on some boots and shoes, usually for women.
Named after the stiletto dagger, the phrase was first recorded in the early 1930s. The stiletto heel can vary in length from 2.5 cm (1 inch) to 25 cm (10 inches) or more if the sol platform is used, and is sometimes defined as having a diameter on the ground less than 1 cm (slightly less than half an inch). Stiletto heel style 5 cm (2.0 inches) or shorter is called kitten heel.
Not all high heels have a stiletto description. A very slim Italian stiletto heel in the late 1950s and early 1960s was not more than 5 mm (0.20 inches) for most of its length, although the heel sometimes widened slightly at the top (tip). After their death in the mid-1960s, such thin heels were hard to find until recently due to changes in the way the heels were mass produced.
