" I Feel Fine " is a song written by John Lennon (credited to Lennon-McCartney) and released in 1964 by The Beatles as an A-side of their eighth British single. This song has one of the first uses of guitar feedback in popular music.

Origin

Lennon wrote a guitar riff while in the recording studio "Eight Days a Week". "I wrote 'I Feel Fine' around the riffs that occurred in the background," he recalled. "I told them I was going to write a special song for the riffs so they said 'Yeah, you go and do that', knowing we almost finished the Beatles for Sale album.Okay, go to a studio morning, I said to Ringo, 'I've written this song but lousy', but we tried it, complete with riff, and it sounded like A-side, so we decided to release it like that. " Both John Lennon and George Harrison say that the riff is influenced by the riffs in "Watch Your Step", a 1961 release written and performed by Bobby Parker and covered by The Beatles in concerts during 1961 and 1962. Paul McCartney says drums on "I Feel Fine "inspired by Ray Charles's 1959 single" What'd I Say ".

During the recording of the song, The Beatles, who have mastered the basics of the studio, have begun exploring new sources of inspiration in sounds that were previously omitted as mistakes (such as electronic goofs, crooked tapes, and comments). "I Feel Fine" marks one of the earliest examples of the use of feedback as a recording effect in popular music. Artists such as Kinks and Who have used live bait, but Lennon remains proud of the fact that the Beatles were probably the first group to accidentally install it on vinyl.

Structure

"I Feel Fine" was written in 4/4 time with drum beat Ringo Starr R & amp; B-influenced (based on "Latin" drums on Ray Charles hit "What'd I Say") is displayed through most of the songs except for bridges, which have a more conventional backbeat. After a brief note on heavy feedback (see below), the intro begins with a different arpeggiated riff that starts at D major before rapidly rises to C major and then G major, where the vocal point begins at G. Melody, , using the minor third and seventh minor, and have been classified as Mixolydian mode. Just before the coda, Lennon's intro riff (or ostinato) was repeated in a bright voice by George Harrison on electric guitar (Gretsch Tennessean). The song ends with a fadeout from the main part of the opening G riff repeated several times.

Audio feedback

"I Feel Fine" begins with a single feedback note made by McCartney picking the A strings on his bass, and Lennon's Guitar (which relies on bass amp McCartney) takes feedback. This is the first use of feedback on rock records. According to McCartney, "John has a Gibson semi-acoustic guitar. There's a pickup on it so it can be strengthened.... We're just about to go to listen to the shoot when John rests his guitar on amp I can still see him doing it... it's gone, 'Nnnnnnnwahhhhh!' And we went, 'What's that? Voodoo!' "No, it's feedback." 'Wow, that sounds good!' George Martin was there so we said, 'Can we have that on record?' 'Well, I think we can, we can edit it on the front.' It's an object to be found, an accident caused by a guitar lean against the amp. "Although it sounded very much like an electric guitar, Lennon actually plays a riff on an acoustic-electric guitar (Gibson J-160E model), using an onboard guitar pickup.

Later, Lennon is very proud of this sonic experiment. In one of his last interviews, he said, "I am against anyone to find records - unless there are some old blues notes in 1922 - that use such feedback."

Music video

Two different music videos directed by Joe McGrath were filmed on November 23, 1965. Both featured a wide range of sports equipment. At first, George sings a ball blow while Ringo rides a practice bike. The second marks the only time a lunch break is filmed, where they all eat fish and chips, while trying pantomime for the song. Brian insists that this video can not be used. Since then, the controversial "fish and chips" trailer has been stored in a videotape box labeled "I Feel Fried". The first music video was included in The Beatles' 2015 video compilation 1 , and both videos were included in a three-disc version of the compilation, titled 1 .
