Machine settings are adjustments, modifications to the internal combustion engine, or modifications to their control unit, otherwise known as the ECU (Machine Control Unit). This is adjusted to produce optimal performance, to improve power output, economy, or engine endurance. These objectives can be mutually exclusive, and the machine can be removed in connection with the output (work) in exchange for a better economy or longer machine life as it reduces the pressure on the engine components.

Tuning machines have a long history, almost as long as car development, which comes from the development of early racing cars and post-war hot-rod movements. Tuning can describe a variety of adjustments and modifications, ranging from carburetor routine settings and ignition systems to significant engine overhaul. At the other end of the scale, engine performance tuning can involve reviewing some of the design decisions taken in the early stages of machine development.

Setting idle speed, fuel/air mix, carburetor balance, spark plugs and gap distribution points, and ignition timing are regular maintenance items for all older machines and final steps but essential in setting up a racing engine. In modern machines equipped with electronic ignition and fuel injection, some or all of these tasks are performed automatically, although they still require regular calibration.

Tune-up usually refers to the machine's regular service to meet manufacturer specifications. Tune-ups are required periodically according to the manufacturer's recommendations to ensure that the car is running as expected. In relation to older cars, modern cars now typically require only a small amount of tune-ups for about 250,000 kilometers (160,000 mi) or 10 years of lifetime. This can be attributed to improvements in the production process, with imperfections and errors reduced by computer automation, and also a significant increase in the quality of consumables, such as the availability of synthetic engine oil completely.

Tune-ups may include the following:

  • Adjustment of carburetor idle speed and air-fuel mixture
  • Inspection and possible replacement of ignition system components such as spark plugs, contact breakers, distributor covers, and distributor rotors
  • Replacement of air filters and other filters
  • Emissions control checks
  • Valvetrain adjustment

In the early days, mechanics completed a performance car tune-up as Ferrari would take it around the track several times to burn the built-in carbon; this is known as an Italian tuneup.

Modern machines are equipped with an engine management system (EMS)/Engine Control Unit (ECU) that can be modified to different settings, resulting in different performance levels. Manufacturers often produce multiple machines that are used in a wider variety of models and platforms, and this allows manufacturers to sell cars in different markets with different regulations without having to spend money developing and designing different machines to comply with these regulations. It also allows for one machine to be used by several different brands, tailored to their specific buyer's market.

Remapping is the newest and simplest form of the first stage Tuning Machines made mostly on turbocharged vehicles that run with modern ECUs. Most of the latest cars running on ECU are mainly supplied by Bosch/Delphi which has firmware that controls various parameters for fuel injection engine to run. The factory firmware is developed to achieve a balance between fuel consumption, power, torque, fuel emissions, reliability, service intervals, etc. All factory firmware versions will never take full advantage of the total potential of the machine and will be simply set to achieve the above. factors mentioned.

Many manufacturers now build one machine and use various alias firmware maps to achieve different power levels to differentiate products (cars) such as VAG 2.0TDI available on 140PS and 170PS which basically have the same internal.

This gives the user the opportunity to unlock more potentials from the machine with some changes in the factory software.

There are many in the performance tuning industry that do this. This is done by reading the factory's firmware from the car using a special tool from the OBD port. Some of the major tool suppliers are CMD, Alientech, Magic Motorsports, etc. These tools can be connected to the OBD port on any car to read the factory files. This file is saved to the computer and various software is available to read this specific file type.

These files are tweaked under various parameters such as fuel injection, push pressure, rail pressure, fuel pump pressure, ignition timing, speed increase, rev and torque limiters, water temperature correction, smoke barrier, EGR removal, etc.

These parameters are set to the safe limits set by expert testing and experience so that unlocked performance is generated below the level of reliability, fuel consumption, and safe emissions.

These tweaks can be made in such a way that we can control the charging and boosts on the required rpms to achieve the expected results. Thus maps may be adjusted for better low end for better city or high end usage for track performance, or an overall map that provides linear power throughout the band.

After the tweak is complete, the edited file is rewritten on the ECU with the same tool used for reading. Once it's done, the engine is turned on and tested for performance, smoke levels and other distractions. Any fine adjustments are made in accordance with the feedback, resulting in a better performing and efficient machine.

After the remap is complete, the suggestion is to reduce the oil change interval. Oil is a major factor for reliability, If you treat your machine with completely synthetic fresh oil at a decent interval, the engine will run for miles.

The exhaust gas temperature will be higher now so do not do WOT running for long periods of time and do idling regularly before turning off the turbo to cool it down.

Performance settings

Performance tuning focuses on tuning the engine for motorsport, although many such cars never compete but are built for driving events or recreations. In this context, power output, torque, and engine responsiveness are essential, but reliability and fuel efficiency are also relevant. In races, the engine must be strong enough to withstand the additional pressure placed on it and the car must carry enough fuel, so it is often much stronger and higher performing than any mass-produced design that may be based. In particular, transmissions, driveshaft and other load transmitter powertrain components may need to be modified to withstand the load from increased power.

In almost all cases, people are interested in increasing the engine power output. Many of the tried and tested techniques have been designed to accomplish this, but all basically operate to increase the rate (and at lower efficiency levels) of combustion in a given machine. This is achieved by adding more air/fuel mixture into the engine, increasing the compression ratio (requiring higher octane gas) burning faster, and getting rid of waste products faster - this improves volumetric efficiency. To check the amount of air/fuel mixture, the air fuel ratio meter is often used. The weight of this fuel will affect the overall performance of the car, so the fuel economy is a competitive advantage. It also means that the engine performance tuning should be done in the context of overall car development.

The choice of modification depends greatly on the level of desired performance improvement, budget, and machine characteristics to be modified. Intake, exhaust, and chip upgrades are usually among the first modifications made because they are the cheapest, making sufficient general improvements, whereas different camshafts, for example, require trading from smoothness at low engine speeds to improvements at high engine speeds.

The overhauled machine is a machine that has been removed, disassembled, cleaned, inspected, repaired as needed and tested using factory approved procedures. The procedure generally involves sharpening, new piston rings, pads, gaskets, oil seals. When performed by a competent engine builder, the machine will appear as new. Machines can be overhauled into 'new limits' or 'service limits', or a combination of both using used parts, new original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts, or new aftermarket parts. The history of the operation of the previous machine is maintained and returned with zero hours since a major overhaul.

Many times aftermarket parts manufacturers are OEM parts suppliers for major machine manufacturers (eg Ishino manufactures both OEM and aftermarket cylinder heads and gasket valve covers for the Nissan VG30E.Often the Nissan logo is included on the OEM section while OEM supplier brands will be printed on the exact same part when offered aftermarket.)

Repairs above only include replacement of components inside the cylinder head without removing the engine from the vehicle, such as valve replacement and rocker arm. This may or may not include valve work . A big improvement but includes the whole assembly of the machine, which requires the machine to be removed from the vehicle and transferred to a standing machine . The revised engine refers to a major overhaul. In comparison, the overhaul costs more than the top repairs.

The 'new limit' is a match and tolerance approved by the factory service that a new machine is created. This can be achieved by using standard or approving size and greatness tolerance. 'Service limits' are the wear and tone of the allowable use of factory service that the new frontier may deteriorate and remain a usable component. This can also be solved by using standards and agreeing size and greatness tolerance.

Rebuild

'Rebuilt engine' is an engine that has been overhauled using new and used parts to new limits by the manufacturer or entity approved by the manufacturer. The history of previous machine operations was eradicated and came with zero hour total time in the service, although the engine may have used installed components that have many hours of previous operating history. Production back or marketing materials sometimes use the word 'remanufactured' to describe this machine.

Remanufactured

Remanufacturing is a term that means the machine is put together to match factory specifications eg. "as new". Although often buyers can assume this means all new parts are used, this is not always the case. At the very least, the cylinder block will be used, like most other parts. Rebuilding high quality will often include new pistons and boring lines from crankshaft and camshaft holes.

Blueprinting

For machine blueprints it means to build it for precise design specifications, limits and tolerances made by oem engineers or other users, such as high performance racing or heavy duty industrial equipment. This is similar to how many other types of mechanical machines are studied, designed and built, such as submarines or the hydraulic press.

Because few have the ability to actually blueprint , and because of monetary incentives to claim someone has done the job, many people who believe blueprint just mean that all specifications are checked repeated. Serious efforts at blueprinting result in better tolerance from the factory, perhaps with specific specifications appropriate for the application. Common targets include re-manufacturing of the engine to achieve rated power for the manufacturer's design (as not all mass-producing machines produce rated power), and to rebuild the engine to generate more power from the given design than intended (since engines can often be redesigned for different specifications). The Blueprint component allows for a more precise balance of reciprocating parts and rotating assemblies so that less power is lost through excessive engine vibration and other mechanical inefficiencies.

Ideally, blueprints are made on components removed from the production line before normal balance and finishing. If the component finishes reprinted, there is a risk that further deletion of the material will weaken the component. Though it has nothing to do with the blueprint per se , the lightening component is generally a benefit provided the balance and strength are reasonably well maintained, and the more precise machining will generally reinforce the part by eliminating the stress points, so in many cases performance tuners can work with completed components.

For example, the engine manufacturer may include a piston ring end specification of 0.003 to 0.006 inches for general use in consumer car applications. For durable racing engines that run at consistently high temperatures, the "blueprint" specification of 0.0045 "to 0.0050" may be desirable. For a drag-racing machine that only runs in short bursts, a tighter tolerance of 0.0035-0.0040 inches is optimal. So a "blueprint" can mean tighter or looser distances, depending on the destination.

History

The electronic Igniscope 'electronic ignition test' was produced by English Electric during the 1940s, initially as a 'UED type' for military use during World War II. The postwar version, the ZWA type 'electronic ignition test', advertised as "the first of its kind, uses a completely new technique".

Igniscope uses a cathode ray tube, providing a completely visual diagnostic method. It was created by D. Napier & amp; Son, a subsidiary of English Electric, and British Patents 495478, 495547 and 563502 applied. Igniscope is able to diagnose latent and actual errors in both coil and magneto ignition systems, including poor battery supply ties, point and condenser problems, distributor failures and spark plugs. One feature is the "loading" of controls that make latent errors more visible.
