Ankylosis or anchylosis (from the Greek ???????, bent, crooked) is joint stiffness due to abnormal adhesion and joint stiffness, which may be the result of injury or disease. Stiffness may be complete or partial and may be due to inflammation of the tendon or muscle structure outside the joint or joint tissue itself.
When structures outside the joint are affected, the term "false ankylosis" has been used in contradiction with "true ankylosis", where the disease is in the joint. When inflammation causes the joints of the bones to coalesce, ankylosis is called osseous or complete and is an example of sinostosis. A fully retarded shoulder or elbow lift can restore mobility and free usability to the extremities. "Ankylosis" is also used as an anatomical term, the bones are said to be ankylose (or anchylose) when, from initially different, they join, or become so joined together that no movement can occur between them.
In 2014, Liliana Cernecca, a six-year-old girl at the time, was only able to open her mouth a few millimeters after one of her jaw joints merged. He underwent surgery to correct his jaw ankylosis at King's College Hospital in London, where his jaw was operated and unlocked. He is said to be one of the youngest patients to undergo this surgery.

Cause
- Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis where there is long-term inflammation of the spine.
- Other forms of arthritis can sometimes also cause ankylosis, including rheumatoid arthritis and reactive arthritis
- Osteoarthritis usually confers the formation of osteophyte, which can eventually melt throughout the joint. Osteoarthritis is believed to be caused by mechanical stresses on joint inflammatory processes and low levels.
- Arthrodesis is the formation of a deliberate ankylosis of the joint.
- Noma - a widespread gangrenous disease among malnourished children living on the Sahara desert border - can cause maxillary and mandibular ankylosis, impair speech and eating ability.

Fossil record
The evidence for ankylosis found in the fossil record is studied by paleopathologists, ancient disease specialists and injuries. Ankilosis has been reported in dinosaur fossils of several species, including Allosaurus fragilis , Becklespinax altispinax , Poekilopleuron bucklandii , and Tyrannosaurus rex > (including Stan specimens).
