The Sims is a life simulation series developed by Maxis and The Sims Studio and published by Electronic Arts. The franchise has sold nearly 200 million copies worldwide, and this is one of the best-selling video game series of all time.

The series was made by Maxis, before the series development was transferred to The Sims Studio between 2006 and 2008. The Sims Studio was later reintegrated into the updated EA Maxis label in 2012, where it continues to be developed by both teams.

The games in the Sims series are mostly sandbox games, as they have no set goals (except for some expansion packages and console versions that introduce this style of game). Players create virtual people called "Sims" and place them in homes and help steer their moods and satisfy their desires. Players can place their Sim in a pre-built house or build it themselves. Each expansion pack and consecutive game in the series adds to what the players can do with their Sims.

Development

Game designer Will Wright was inspired to create a "virtual dollhouse" after losing his home during the Oakland fire storm of 1991 and then rebuilding his life. Changing his home and his other things made him think to adapt the life experience into a game. When Wright initially brought his ideas to Maxis board of directors, they were skeptical and provided little support or financing for the game. Directors at Electronic Arts, who bought Maxis in 1997, more readily accepted - SimCity have been a great success for them, and they foresee the possibility of building a powerful Sim . franchise.

Wright also stated that The Sims is actually intended as a satire of US consumer culture. Wright also took the idea of the 1977 urban architecture and design book A Pattern Language, American psychologist Abraham Maslow in 1943 A Theory of Human Motivation paper and his hierarchy of needs, and Charles Hampden - Turner's to develop a model for artificial intelligence games.

Main series

The Sims

The Sims is the first game in this series. Developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts, was released for Microsoft Windows in February 2000. The game uses dimmetric projection and simulated features open from the daily activities of one or more virtual people ("Sims") in the suburbs near SimCity. Seven expansion packages and two deluxe editions with exclusive content have been released. It was repackaged in several different formats, and different versions were released on several different platforms. On March 22, 2002, The Sims has sold over 11.3 million copies worldwide, surpassing Myst as the best-selling PC game in history. The original game, all seven expansion packs, and two deluxe edition content packages are the first generation of the series on PC. All PC releases are developed by Maxis.

The Sims 2

Electronic Arts released The Sims 2 on September 14, 2004. This sequel, developed by Maxis, takes place in a full 3D environment as opposed to the dimmetry projection of the original game. Sims ages through seven stages of life, from infancy to old age and subsequent death. Another key feature is the aspiration system. Each Sim shows desires and fears according to his aspirations and personality. As a result, the aspiration level of the meter determines the effectiveness of the Sim on completing the task. Fulfillment of desire provides aspiration points, which can be used to purchase aspirational gifts. In addition, the game features sunny days of the week, with weekends where children can stay home from school and holidays when adults can take time off work.

The Sims 2 is set about 25 years after the original game. For example, the Goth family has aged significantly with the Bella Goth mysteriously disappearing ("dying") at some point in the 25-year period. Since the entire game has grown from 2D sprites to 3D models, all content in The Sims 2 must be created from the bottom up. Because of this, The Sims 2 is not backwards-compatible with any content from the first generation of the main series. However, some of the objects and features of the original series are remade for the sequel.

Electronic Arts released eight expansion packages and nine packages of goods for The Sims 2 . Over 400 items were also released for the game through The Sims 2 Store. In addition, items including pre-orders are released during this generation's lifecycle.

The Sims Studio was made in 2006, and between that time and 2008 franchise development was slowly submitted to the new studio from Maxis, with the former studio now focusing its resources on the next project - Spore .

The Sims 3

Electronic Arts released The Sims 3 on June 2, 2009. The sequel was developed by The Sims Studio, announced by EA in November 2006. The game is set 25 years before the original game, and features an open, seamless environment , improved tools for Sim creation, build and buy functionality of enhanced mode, and the introduction of wishes and goals. The game introduces a new form of gameplay that is directed through a small, step-wise goal that is presented as an opportunity that players can choose to pursue or refuse. The Sims 3 sold 1.4 million copies in its first week, making it the biggest release in the history of PC games at the time. The game has sold over 10 million copies worldwide since its release.

In 2013, the EA restructuring saw The Sims Studio reintegrated with a revitalized EA Maxis label. Since the 9th expansion of The Sims 3 , Life University, released in March 2013, the franchise Sims has returned in EA Maxis development control, including new expansion and development packages, with The Sims Studio operating inside the label.

Eleven expansion packs and nine packets of goods were released for the third generation of the series. In addition, many items are available online for additional charges at the The Sims 3 Store.

The Sims 4

Electronic Arts announced The Sims 4 on May 6, 2013. The announcement stated that the game was being developed by EA Maxis, and in it, The Sims Studio. The Sims 4 occurs in an alternate setting of the previous game. Then in 2014, more details about the features and gameplay are announced. Release date 2 September 2014 announced on E3 2014.

In May 2018, four expansion packs, six game packs, and fourteen item packs were released for the fourth generation of the series. The update has added content that previously was not there due to time constraints or other reasons, such as dungeons, ghosts, swimming pools and toddlers. New career also added.

Spin-off

The Sims Online

In December 2002, Electronic Arts released Maxi-developed The Sims Online , which was later named EA Land . It rebuilds The Sims as a massive multiplayer online game, where human players can interact with each other. Spin-offs do not achieve the same level of success as the original. Reviews for The Sims Online are not excited. Many reviewers liken the The Sims Online experience to a very large chat room. On August 1, 2008, EA-Land stores were closed.

The Sims Stories

The Sims Stories is a series of video games from The Sims series released in 2007-2008 that are based on a modified version of The Sims 2 machine. The modified game engine is optimized to play on systems with weaker specifications such as laptops. Thus, the system requirements are lower than The Sims 2 , but they can still be played on the desktop. The series was introduced primarily to three market segments: those who want to play The Sims 2 on their laptops (which usually have lower specifications); those who want to engage in other activities such as instant messaging while playing games, and; those new to the franchise. In addition to the Free Play mode with classic and open game play, this game contains a structured and linear Story mode, where players are required to complete a set of goals to advance in the storyline. While Life Stories and Pet Stories each contain two separate stories, Castaway Stories contains a story that has twice the length of a story in the beginning of two games. As a preliminary series, the main features are deleted or changed from those in The Sims 2 . For example, fears are completely removed in all three games, and the older stage of life is completely removed in Pet Stories .
