The Chronicles of Narnia is a series of films based on The Chronicles of Narnia, a series of novels by C. S. Lewis. Of the seven novels, there are three film adaptations so far - The Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe (2005), Prince Caspian (2008) and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010) - which has grossed $ 1.5 billion worldwide among them.

The series revolves around the adventures of children in the world of Narnia, guided by Aslan, a wise and powerful lion who can speak and is the true king of Narnia. The most prominent children in the film are the Pevensie brothers, and the prominent antagonist is the White Witch (also known as Jadis).

The first two films were directed by Andrew Adamson and the third movie directed by Michael Apted. The fourth film will be directed by Joe Johnston.

Development

C. S. Lewis has never sold film rights to the Narnia series during his lifetime, as he is skeptical that cinematic adaptations can make the element and character of the story more fantastically realistic. Just after seeing the CGI animal reel demo, Douglas Gresham (Lewis stepchild and literary executor, and film producer) gave approval for the film adaptation.

Although his original plan was to produce the film in the same order as the original publication of the book series, it was reported that the Magician's Niece, who narrates the creation of Narnia, would be the fourth feature film in the series instead of The Silver Chair . It was rumored that the The Magician's Nephew was chosen as an attempt to reboot the series, after the release of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader scooped less when compared to the previous two films.. In March 2011, Walden Media confirmed that they intend The Magician's Nephew to be the next in the series, but stressed that it has not been in development.

In October 2011, Douglas Gresham stated that Walden Media contracts with a C.S plantation. Lewis has come to an end, hinting that Walden Media's negligence in renegotiating their contract with C. S. Lewis's estate is due to internal conflicts between the two companies about the direction of future films.

On October 1, 2013, Company C.S. Lewis announced a partnership with Mark Gordon Company, and that the Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair was officially in pre-production.

Movies

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe , based on a novel of the same title, is the first film in the series. Directed by Andrew Adamson, the film is taken primarily in New Zealand, although the location is used in Poland, the Czech Republic, and the UK.

The story follows four British Pevensie brothers, who were evacuated during Blitz to the countryside, where they found a wardrobe that led to the Narnian fantasy world. There, they must ally themselves with Aslan's lions against the White Witch's army, which has placed Narnia in an eternal winter.

The film was released theatrically on December 9, 2005 and on DVD on April 4, 2006 and earned $ 745 million more worldwide.

Prince Caspian (2008)

Prince Caspian , based on a novel of the same title, is the second film in the series and the last one distributed by Walt Disney Pictures.

The story follows the same Pevensie children who were transported to Narnia in the previous film when they returned to Narnia, where 1,300 years have passed and the land has been attacked by Telmarines. The four Pevensie children assisted Prince Caspian in his struggle for the throne against his corrupt uncle, King Miraz.

The film was released on May 16, 2008. It earned $ 419 million worldwide.

The Dawn Treader Cruise (2010)

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, based on a novel of the same title, is the first film in a series not produced jointly by Disney, who resigned because of a budget dispute with Walden Media. In February 2009 it was announced that 20th Century Fox would replace Disney for the next installment. Directed by Michael Apted, the film is filmed almost entirely in Australia.

The story follows two young Pevensies as they return to Narnia with their cousin, Eustace Scrubb. They join the old Narnian king, Caspian, in his attempt to rescue the seven lost kings and rescue Narnia from the destructive crime that is on the burning island.

The film was released on December 10, 2010 (in RealD 3D in selected theaters) and earned over $ 415 million worldwide.

The Silver Chair

After Walden Media's contract of film rights' ending in 2011 originally it was assumed that 2014 would be the earliest that production on another movie Narnia could begin in accordance with a moratorium placed on CS Lewis estate rights to sell options book movie.

On October 1, 2013, CS Lewis Company announced that it has entered into an agreement with Mark Gordon Company to produce The Silver Chair, based on The Silver Chair

In July 2014, the official website of Narnia allowed an opportunity for fans to suggest names for Lady of Green Kirtle, the main antagonist. The name of the winner should be chosen by Mark Gordon and David Magee for use in the last manuscript of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair.

While film producers have referred to the film as a "reboot" for the series, this actually refers to the fact that the film has a new creative team unrelated to those who worked on three previous films. The film itself is still considered a sequel to the film adaptation of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. On August 9, 2016, it was announced that Sony TriStar Productions and Entertainment One Films will fund and distribute the fourth film with Mark Gordon Company (which eOne owns) and C. S. Lewis Company.

In April 2017, it was announced that Joe Johnston had been hired to direct the The Silver Chair . In October, Johnston said the shooting is expected to begin in late 2018.

During an interview with Red Carpet News TV, producer Mark Gordon revealed rare details about new technologies and settings that will be used for future movies, but did not release dates.
