Long blocks are automotive terms for machine sub-assemblies consisting of assembly blocks, crankshaft, cylinder head, camshaft (usually), and valve trains. Long blocks do not include fuel, power, intake, and exhaust systems, and other components (see below for a more complete list).
- Short block. The long block is always a superset of the appropriate short blocks.
- Cylinder head. A cylinder head assembly is fitted with a head gasket and burned to the specification. Complete cylinder heads include valves, valve springs, valve guides (if any), valve seats (if any), valve locks, and valve protectors. Flathead machines include valve trains if not equipped with short blocks.
- Camshaft on most machines. On many machines with time gears, the ridge shaft is timed.
- Oil pot and possibly valve cover.
Replacement of long block machines usually requires replacement of components from the original machine into long blocks. These parts include oil pan, timing cover, valve cover, intake manifold, emission control section, carburetor or fuel injection system, exhaust manifold, alternator, starter, power steering pump (if any), and AC compressor (if any).
