The Hacker Ministry is the fictitious British government administration of James Honor Right "Jim" Hacker, Prime Minister of the British Empire, as portrayed in the British sitcom, Yes, Prime Minister.

There is no reason to believe that the broadcast date of the series (1980-1988) is intended to conform to the actual date that Hacker seized as Minister or Prime Minister. There is, in fact, much evidence to assume that while the two series are broadcast for nine years, that events recorded in the series take place over a much shorter period of time; episodes aired for years are explicitly identified in the dialogue as taking place within a few days of each other.

Then, when Lynn and Jay write a novelization of two series (written in diary form, with each date entry), the volume Yes Minister occurs for two years, and Yes, the Prime Minister volume lasts for one year. Specifically the year, however, is not explicitly identified in the text.

However, it is possible to know the hacker's tenure as Minister of Administrative Affairs, and the beginning of his term as PM, through some internal guidance. The story of "The Skeleton In The Cupboard" (the last story in Yes, Minister ) occurred in the early 1980s, because it revolves around the disclosure of a scandal that occurred "thirty years ago" in the "early fifties". The "Game Party", the opening story on Yes, the Prime Minister , follows directly after this story, and in it Hacker makes a speech that he believes will secure his candidacy as PM on Friday, January 13th. The only time January 13th fell on Friday in the early 1980s was in 1984. Further dates in the book (Thursday, July 19, etc.) also fell in 1984.

In the books, then, Hacker hacker terms can be done as follows:

  • Member of Parliament for East Birmingham: From about 1961 to about 1984
  • Minister of Shadow Agriculture: c. 1974/75 - October 21, 1981
  • Minister of Administrative Affairs: October 24, 1981 - January 17, 1984
  • Prime Minister: January 18, 1984 - January 28, 1988

The last diary entry in Yes, Prime Minister is for November 14th year Hackers took over the office. An epilogue for the American edition Yes, the Prime Minister mentions that Hacker continues as prime minister after this early year, and details some of his political victories and failures in the future. This epilogue mentions Hacker's "subsequent years" as PM, implying that Hacker served as PM for a long period of time.

In the TV series, Prime Minister Hacker succeeded (and served below, as Minister of Administrative Affairs) unnamed and invisible. In the book Yes, Prime Minister , Hacker's predecessor is identified as Herbert Attwell.

In his novelist, Sir Humphrey's personal paper was released under a thirty-year rule in 2019. This paper began from the beginning of Hacker's career at the Department of Administrative Affairs, and had to be completed in 1989, thirty years before they were released. The conclusion must be that all "Yes, Minister" and "Yes, Prime Minister" occurred before 1989, which corresponds to the above date.

Government

The hacker party holds a majority in the House of Commons. Below is a member of the Hacker Cabinet, as much as expressed during serial broadcast.

Information is also reaping from novelization. The information contained in the novelization does not necessarily correspond precisely to the events on the television show, possibly for continuity (for example, although there is a new Minister of Foreign Affairs in Yes, the Prime Minister , this book notes that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the episode Yes Minister "Party Feast" still hold the position).

Consequently, this list is by no means complete or comprehensive, since the names of those who hold many portfolios in the Hacker government are never disclosed or discussed.

Nor is it mentioned which government Hacker is functioning, and as a result is in the Opposition. However, in the opening scene of the Pilot episode (Hacker's constituent victory victory) he was seen wearing a white rosette between the Labor Party candidate and the Conservative Party.
